What is "vertical sync"? I disabled it on my 8500 and it made a big difference.

A saw a post somewhere on this message board mentioning that you should disable "vertical sync" on the Radeon 8500. I had been having problems with Unreal tournament in Win XP, it stuttered like hell (something it never did in Win98).

So after trying different things to get the darn game to run right, I tried that.

What a difference!!! So why the heck does ATI enable vertical sync if it makes the card run worse? (it was on by default)

What exactly does "v-sync " do?? I sure didn't make things better. What is it for?

Thanks.

As far as I know, it keeps your monitors refresh rates in sync with the video card.. or something along the lines of that. If you turn it off, in some cases, it would produce some screen tearing and some graphical errors. Try turning it off in CS and you'll see what I mean.
