What is up with Plextor drives?

I was browsing the Plextor site looking for optical drives, as I might get new ones for my new system. I'll be getting two: a 16x Dual Layer DVD±RW and a 52x CD-RW. There are two models that caught my interest, the PX-716A and the PlexWriter 52/24/52A.

I know that Plextor is known for high quality products, but I was wondering if the price premium is really worth it (I mean, I have a Samgung CD-RW that never burnt a coaster in over 400 burns). Pioneer has a rather decent 16x Dual Layer burner for under $100 that also looks good, and CD-RW drives are really cheap right now (an OEM 52x Sony retails for $30).

The bottom line is: should I try to get Plextor or not?

You seem to have answered your own question. Yes, Plextor reliability in my experience has been second to none, but that is not to say that my liteOn or Pioneer have given me any grief either. Plextor do have a good returns policy if I remember correctly, which bears testimony to their products I guess.

If you upgrade every 10 minutes get the cheaper alternatives. If you want proven reliability go for the Plextor. Either way it's a question of affordability I think. :)

I bought a Plextor Premium. I like it but it really doesn't do anything more than my Lite-On drive. It has alot of cool utilities included if you like to tweak your drive to be quieter etc.
