What is Tom's Hardware doing?

Tom has lots of good knowledge. There are many things that Anand knows that Tom doesn't know and vice versa. Anandtech has better reviews (except video cards) but I always hear Dr. Tom being mentioned in other people's articles.

Love him or hate him, Tom's site affects the industry like no other.

While Anand's site is slicker, has more current news, more thorough reveiws, and a much better forum, for a "big-player" he certainly does not really stir things up AT ALL. Anand seems to plays it safe and appears to steer clear of controversy. Some find this a respectable and dignified thing, others find it boring. I guess the bottom line is that this attitude puts him on all the manufacturers A-lists...

Cool, I'll have to read this article, only thing is, it seems his site is being hammer hard right now.

I think I'll start yet another hardware site and call it "AAA AuricTech". That way I will always be at the top of manufacturer's "A-lists" 😀

I should at least be a Topaz Member by now. Sheesh.

You can save the article as HTML pages. File->SaveAs-> ....

I don't agree with Tom that the image quality difference is barely visible. As least not for the shots he had posted.

I agree. The loss in quality is very plain. I do think it's fantastic that DivX/MP4 is doing to video what MP3 has done to sound. It's just one step closer to streaming, high quality video. In fact, the whole idea of lossy compression is fascinating from a mathematical standpoint: sacrifice a little quality for a lot of space.

I don't think the article was that dicey... any idiot who's used FlasK can figure out how to use it (even if you can't it comes with excellant documentation). A key ingredient for copying a DVD was not mentioned in this article (probably on purpose) rippers...

Tom's Hardware is the biggest PC site on the internet and I make a habit of visiting it every day. I would trust the reviews there over anybody elses and he seems very knowledgeable about all aspects of computing. Anytime I quote benchmarks I always use Tom's ones if I can.

Basically it's probably my favourite PC site. 🙂

<< Is there a way to convert it to high-quality MPEG 4 that puts it at about 1300mb or so? >>

I have never tried converting an DVD to MPEG4, but I`m pretty sure that`s possible, by simply turning the bitrate of the MPEG4 up.... (like when you do an mp3@128 kbps or at 256 kbps).

I really like how Tom uses .jpg (an compression format that will reduce image quality, and make any comparison unreliable) as the image format for all his screenshots....now I know why his site is usually doing hardware reviews! 😉

If you want to make higher quality DivXs' you should use the "Low-motion" codec (high-motion sucks IMO) and just up the bitrate to 1500-2000 that usually makes a movie fit on 2 CD's.

Anoyone familiar with www.digital-digest.com will be VERY familiar with the software that tom (frank) mentions. Since Toms guide is just a slightly different explainantion, but poorer guide to DVD ripping (illegal).

If you want a comprehensive guide, go to www.digital-digest.com (or www.divx-digest.com). But you CAN get lost there unless you know what you are after.

I have a good guide made by myself about converting dvd to avi, (via flaskMPEG) and I include dedicated instructions and all the required software. My site is at:
http://7khat.tsx.org, don't be fooled, since it's a Rammstein fan site, just click on over to the DVD Section, and then DVD Ripping subsection.

When you master the awesome ability of DVD ripping, then you can start screwing with subtitles !!

have fun

How old is this Divx/MPEG4 stuff because I already have had some CDRs(in DivX format) (with BACKUP films, ofcourse) for some weeks now.
I was amased at first, that win MP 7 did not want to play them.
