What is Tom hiding from us about AMD?

"For some people it's going to be the equivalent of the discovery of the monolith in 2001: A Space Odysee."

i never saw that movie... so, what does that statement mean? is "discovering the monolith" a good suprise or a disappointment?

according to the movie the monolith was the thing that sparked apes to start to think and therefore evolving into humans, so it must be big this amd thing

edt..
btw, dont go and see that movie, most boring movie ever made, I watched the first 30 minutes or so of it and absolutely NOTHING had happened

Czar, Tomshardware is not the only place that is talking about something big coming from AMD this year.

Vanshardware (despite their blatantly biased nature) said that AMD, behind closed doors, made some very interesting announcements, but that NDA's restrict them from revealing any more than that.

Searching through other hardware forums on the Internet, I found some info regarding an early ClawHammer release. This info supposedly came from individuals who attended one of AMD's tech tours recently. Whether this is what Tomshardware describes as the "monolith" in the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey, I don't know.

One thing's for sure, something's a brewing...

Maybe its just the translation from German to English, but this "something afoot" message strikes me as ominous. I interpreted it like this:

AMD has great confidence in Hammer, and that's good. But something is going to rain on the parade... It all looks good, or is it?

Honestly though, this isn't much in the way of news.

Well if it is an early release then I see where Tom is coming from. ClawHammer will spawn a new age of computational power, or more simply put, it will be a huge advancement in the world of computers. I guess the computer world in general would be the "apes" and the monolith would be AMD's new offering.

It all bodes well for AMD's continued confidence in Hammer, or is there something else afoot? There's something else afoot. For some people it's going to be the equivalent of the discovery of the monolith in 2001: A Space Odysee.

something ELSE than hammer, read again :) (according to tom)

according to the vanshardware site they [amd] were talking behind closed doors to some people:

>
Behind closed doors and under NDA, the chipmaker also delivered some of the most interesting and exciting news of WinHEC. AMD will publicly announce details of these confidential disclosures in the coming weeks.
>

However its not clear in the last article if they actually *do* mean hammer with the "most exciting news"...would make sense reading the article where they talk about thouroughbred and barton before coming to this "mysterious" statenment at the end.

however tom says its something else than hammer...

They are probably talking about Microsoft x86-64 support...if that's not it, I think that what it is will be revealed within the next two weeks.

They're already getting Linux support. What's so exciting about MS support? :D

Very interesting. GeForce 4 4600 on the Thoroughbred? :D ONchip LAN, modem, and 5.1 sound?! :D :D

I dunno, the suspense is killing me! Hopefully it's not just 512kb of L2 cache, but a 333 or 400 mhz fsb TBred would be cool.

Perhaps it is the fact that Intel has started to reverse engineer the Hammer line and will be competing with AMD over the x86-64 cpu's.

I think the key phrase he used is "for some people". That really intrigues me. That leads me to believe whatever is coming will benefit a select/target group. I will not be included as usual I'm sure.

Hammer (whether you're talking ClawHammer or SledgeHammer) isn't targeted at the same market Itanium is (I assume you mean McKinley when you say "Itanium").

I have no idea what Tom's talking about but 2001: A Space Odysee is one of the best movies ever made.
