What car is that? I didn't think modern cars used inboard brakes like that. I know Jaguar did back in the day.

Yeah, it's a 1990 Jag XJS.

It looks like it's simply the hub carrier. You can see how the rest of the rear suspension attaches to it. There has to be some rigid point to which the trailing arm and the springs and shocks can attach; you can't just have the half-shaft flopping around out there with nothing to locate it.

EDIT: A half shaft needs positive location at both ends. The transaxle or differential provides positive location on the inboard end, and the hub carrier (to which the suspension components attach) provides location for the outboard end. The CV joints on either end of the half-shaft allow the inboard and outboard locations some flexibility to move relative to each other in order to accommodate suspension travel.

Oh christ just get rid of it now

lol...I bought it and intend to keep it, knowing the probs it came with ;)

There's nothing wrong with it once you accept that it's British, and just consider it the Queen's revenge for the whole snafu in Boston and the loss of taxes that came from it.

My uncle got an '83 XJ6, beautiful car. Cost him $3k, just needed a valve job to pass smog. Spent $2k to get the valve job done, drove it occasionally. Two years later he sold it for $2k, just needed a valve job to pass smog. Again.

The motors in those are just a nightmare to keep going.

I know you probably didn't see the original thread, but this is the eventual intent. I wanted a nice base car to work with, and it doesn't get much better than this.

Very very cool! I'd love to see lots of pics / videos when you get around to that. I agree, aside from the questionable original drivetrain, the Jags have almost always been really interesting to look at and comfortable cars to boot.
