I don't see anything wrong with it. If people are comfortable meeting and/or interacting in that social space, why should the fact that it wasn't around 50 years ago make any difference. Social interaction is done where people believe it works - in the end that's all that's required - a belief that it's real and sufficient.

If either party gets duped because of misleading information, they'll do things differently next time. Same as anything else - try something and if it works, do it again. If not, change.
