What is this red stuff on google maps?

Where's the place you looked up? If it's in NC, then it's probably the red clay type soil in the area. If it's in UT, then it's probably the red rocks that dominate the area.

It's the ant invasion. They've been organizing themselves in those hills and are just about ready to strike.

That looks like plain old Virginia red clay and that picture is actually south of Luray, Virginia. That is the south fork of the Shenandoah River on the left and a piece of Shenandoah Park/Skyline Drive on the right.

I'm going to go with this one. I don't know *why* something would end up blood red in such an image, but it is apparent from the unform green hue of everything else that the image is using false color.
