What is this on my P4 2.53 Retail Heatsink?

I just removed the black thermal paste on the bottom of my P4 2.53 retail heatsink but found this silver sticker-like thing underneath the paste. What is this? Am I supposed to peel or scrap this off if I am going to put on some Arctic Silver paste? Thanks.

Yes, take that off too. It's a piece of aluminum and underneath that is more of the black thermal goo. Clean it all up real good with acetone or isopropyl alcohol, apply your ASII and you're good to go.

Why didn't you just use it the way it came? That black square is Intels high quality temperature whatever they call it. I used it on mine and my temps have been pretty stable. I mean what is the point in taking it off and then putting on the paste.

the Artic Silver 3 usually drops the temp about 1-3 degrees C...not enough for the general user but for guys that want their temps way low don't mind spending the extra $5.
