What is this new NVidia mobile GPU I'm hearing about?

Wasn't sure whether to put this here or in the SFF/Notebooks Forum.

I'm thinking about buying a custom-configured laptop from Powernotebooks.com. A lot of their models say "Out of stock until mid-Mar." So I called to inquire what was going on. I was told:

"I can't say much but we're waiting until then when the new NVidia mobile GPUs come out, so we can assess our situation."

I'M THINKING: "Hmm, best to wait until then when the outgoing models will be discounted."

So what is this "next big thing" in mobile GPUs? Is it supposed to be a game-changer, or is it just a refresh of what's out there now for NVidia?

are you talking about the tegra k1? It's for phones and tablets, and it's more of an increment than a game changer, but it has quite a few cool features...

Take a look at the gtx 750 and 750 ti reviews. These chips will be released in mobile parts.

Yeah, I'm going to go out on a limb and guess GTX 750/750Ti or 28nm Maxwell based GPUs either full or cut down. At any rate GM107.

Honestly, I have no idea what model number I'm talking about. I don't follow the mobile space much at all. The laptop I'm looking at comes with a GTX 770M stock. They offer the 780M as an upgrade option, but at $350, no thanks.

I'm just thinking that if the next "Big dog" mGPU is coming out, the price of the stock 770M may go down a bit.

860m is from the new 107 Maxwell chips , same as 750/750ti .

This article suggests the Maxwell 28 860M (45W) will be comparable in performance to the Kepler 770M (75W)

A 770M is essentially a GK106 or GTX660 desktop equivalent. And yes, prices are quite steep for laptop GPUs that perform.

By the specs, and if Mobile Maxwell is a full 640 CudaCores, then it will most likely be around the performance of a 760M. This is of course depending on the final clocks. But It "should" be quite a bit slower than a 770M, but uses a boatload less juice as well.

Hmm, using less juice is important, but not a deal breaker. I've bought quite a few laptops in my time but I've only had one that had a discrete GPU. I still own that laptop and in it's day, way outperformed anything with integrated graphics. Being that I'm looking at a laptop with a 19x10 screen, I figure I will need all the graphics horsepower I can get. I keep tech a long time, so want to get something nice that will last awhile.
