me and several peeps are experiencing this annoying popup ... i'm sure alot of you peeps have this too..

it's a small popup box w/ 'ok' button on it.. it's just an advertising, if i press 'ok' nothing happens, but the pop up closes..

this pop up really annoys me when i'm playing game.. because it kicks me back to desktop :p

anyone know what this is caused by? .. i suspected real player, msn messenger, but seems like it's something else..

Is it the Windows Messageing service built into Windows NT/2K/XP ? Or is it a web browser popup?

Two ways to stop the windows messaging service.
1) Turn the service off completely.
2) Block the port (not sure which one) on your firewall.

Please don't refer to Messenger Service as "spyware". Not only is it not spyware, it's been a part of NT since 3.51 (possibly earlier...not sure). Naturally, Messenger Service predates the "world wide web". The only reason this issue is becoming so annoying now is because some jerk realized that every machine being sold lately has NT installed, and told all the other scum-sucking spammers that they can use the NetSend for spam purposes.

Most home users have no need for Messenger Service. You can safely disable it.

ok.. i found the file by searching for 'services' .. and it's 'microsoft common console document' ..

anyway.. in there.. there's 'Messenger' part.. and if i go in .. it says "Transmits net send and Alerter service messages between clients and servers. This service is not related to Windows Messenger. If this service is stopped, Alerter messages will not be transmitted. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start."

so.. if it's not related to Windows Messenger.. i can just disable it :p ?

lmk.. thanks

Yes. Copied from a link posted elsewhere on the board:

Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.
Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
Change the startup type to Disable

You will likely have to be an admin on your box.
