Snus in Swedish, since I dont know what it's called, I can only give this link as a referece.
Gothiatek.

I guess snuff comes sorta close, but for one thing, it's not exactly right, and for another thing, that word can mean completely different, and not quite as nice things ;)

Just curious.

Smokless tobacco is referred to as "Chewing Tobacco", "chew" or "snuff" here in the U.S.

some people will refer to canned smokeless tobacco as "dip" as well.

I didn't read enough of the site to see if it was more like the pouches of Levi Garrett and Redman, or more like cans of Copenhagen or Kodiak

Well, it's not chewing tobacco, I suspect that would be a rather unpleasant experience.

Maybe there simply isn't a word for it.

Oh and big daddy Roger, thanks for the help.

Rather than chewing it you put it between your teeth and your lip. Typical longterm effects: Cancer in the mouth, especially in the lips.

Edit: Correction, according to research this stuff just makes your teeth yellow and your breath foul, it doesn't cause cancer: Link

Halfway correct, there's no proof whatsoever for the latter.

That stuff would simply be "snuff". It's ground to fine to be "chew" or "dip".

You are welcome.

I have two good friends of mine die from chewing tobacco, they both had cancer of the larynx which then spread to other parts of thier bodies.

It's not really snuff--you inhale snuff.
It's just a special chew that's indigenous to Sweden, I suppose.

Sorry to hear that, but like I said, there's been numerous studies, and none have shown a connection between the nameless stuff and mouth/lip cancer, unlike cigarettes.

Dont know anything about the effects of chewing tobaco, so I'll take your word for it.

From the website -
Swedish Snus is a moist to semi-moist, ground, oral tobacco product which is used behind the upper lip. Swedish Snus exists in two packaging formats, loose Snus and portion packed Snus. Both forms exist in different flavour varieties.

There are 4 main types of smokeless tobacco that I'm aware of in the US.

1. leaf tobacco - Example - Redman. It's basically whole leaf tobbacco that you pull out of a foil bag in chunks and stick it in your cheek. VERY nasty looking crap.

2. Plug tobacco - tobacco that's formed into a brick that you bite off and chew

3. Snuff - very finely ground tobacco fibers in a canister that you snort up your nose

4. Dipping tobacco - comes in a canister like Coppenhagen or Skoal. You "dip" into the can and place the "dip" behind your lower lip between your lip and your teeth.

This stuff sounds IDENTICAL to dipping tobacco wich IS ALSO called by the generic phrase of "chewing tobacco" here in the states. All we are doing is arguing semantics across a language barrier. It's the same stuff, you just call it something different.

Any way you look at it, users of smokeless tobacco have a MUCH MUCH MUCH higher rate mouth and throat cancers than any other demographic in the world.

Vi_edit, you don't chew "snus", you place it under your lip, if you like to call that chewing tobacco for some reason, fine.

And, like I have repeatedly said, many studies have come up with no connection whatsoever between snus and cancer.

In fact, not too long ago, the Swedish goverment had a little note on the snus containers saying something along the lines of "Causes mouth cancer", until the EU forced them to remove it, cause there was no proof.

And trust me, if there was a shred of proof, the Swedish goverment would love to be all over it, they love telling us how dangerous everything is.

Like I said, "snus" is the equivalent of Dipping tobacco here in the States. Lots of people just lump it under the generic phrase of "chew" or "chewing tobacco".

Don't bother vi_edit,it's obvious that no matter what is said,he is not going to open his mind to the fact that tobacco kills in any form.

For 200 years here in the U.S.,it was said that smoking cigs was not detrimental toy our health.
Why ?

Big Tobacco companies fought back with big money and propaganda.
The almighty dollar speaks louder than common sense.

What is said now about smoking ? ;)

I'm not going to call you an idiot in so many words but YOU ask the question:
What is this called in English?
In English, we call this bhewing tobacco, dip, chaw, chew, and occaisionally snuff although that would be a misnomer.
Further, if you think that you chew on chewing tobacco the same way you chew gum, you are mistaken. Chewing tobacco you stick in a wad in your cheek or under your lip, which is EXACTLY what they tell you to do with this stuff.

In English, "Snus" would simply be called CHEWING TOBACCO or DIP.

How about you present some proof, or maybe you're just good at spewing misinformation.
But I guess thats too much to ask, especially from a guy who obviously knows alot more about these things than the people who spend their time doing studie about it.

Oh and vi_edit, thanks for the explaination, since chewing tobacco isn't exactly common around here, my experience with it is limited to what I see in the movies, where hill-billys typically have a mouthful of it, and go around and spit lots of not so nice looking brown stuff all over the place ;)

Here is one with many more to come.

Edit...Link

To make it easier, here is a google search

Link

That is only a start.

I guess misinformation is worth a $145 billion suit that was won against big tobacco.

Edit

Try this Link as well.

I would strongly suggest that you read up on what you are talking about before you open that cancer ridden mouth of yours.

Edit

All the proof you Want

You have a lot of reading in front of you my friend.
