What is this BIOS problem on my pc chips m830 mobo?

The computer I just put together last night is being cranky.

When I first started it, it complained that the memory size is wrong... it gives me the choice to (a) enter bios setup or (b) load defaults and continue

If I choose (b) everything seems to start ok, but i still get the same problem in future reboots.

if I choose (a) everything looks ok in the BIOS and I select "save the changes"... but when it resets I get nothing but a blank screen until I clear the bios with a jumper.

I have suspicions that this may be happening because
(1) default bios specifies a floppy drive, but i can't seem to hook the cable up properly so it's disconnected
(2) default bios specifies an IDE-0 -> floppy boot order, and although the windows cd-rom on IDE-0 is bootable, my HD is on IDE-1 and like i said i don't have a floppy.

When I get home I'm going to try really hard if i can get the floppy drive working (it doesn't seem to have pin #1 marked) and failing that I'll erase all references to it in the bios.

any other ideas?

The equipment is:
-pc chips m830lr mobo
-duron 750
-creative 6x seedy rom
-256m nanya ddr cas-2
-ibm 41m 60xgp
-voodoo 3500 vivo
