What is this beast?!

The reason it is SO expensive is because they are WORKSTATION CARDS. They are meant for DESIGNING, NOT PLAYING, games. They have some very complex hardware and software when compared with gaming cards.
 
well they are low production cards, making thme inherently harder to make a profit form than mass market cards(assuming devlopment, overhead,etc remains constant no matter what ) it's all about economies of scale.

How well will it handle Half-Life 2?

1. They give any CAD Monkey they are bestowed upon the supa.

2. They're more geared towards OpenGL, and are engineered for workstation perfomance, not gaming. The drivers will be a huge limiting factor. If I had to guess I'd say that an X850XT would be faster in HL2.
 
it seems like the weight of that could break a mobo with leverage...if the gpu is mounted that far behind the interface and its got that giant cooler on it...seems to defy laws of physics to me
