It's a small Cabletron (now Enterasys) modular manageable 10bt hub (router). I had more than a dozen larger versions of that series plus a lot of fibre-optic blades a while back and couldn't give 'em away.

hehe... whoops... guess I should have enlarged the photo to read the module numbers. I was just going off the case model number.

correction,

after looking further at the pics that is indeed an ethernet hub. Very usable at home if you just need a hub.

problem is a 20 dollar switch from walmart is going to be 100 times faster.
Heh, oh well. As long as it works. Will this be okay for lanning?

No.

And i thought it was a network bridge.

Looks like a router/hub of some sort. Notice that it's 240v equipment. Odd.

240v? That looks like a standard power cable like on the back of a computer to me...
*Smacks head* Oops... looks like it's both :p I was reading the right side instead of the left.

It's a hub. You can network a few dozen computers together with it if you want. It'll work with standard ethernet cards, though only at 10Mbps. Most people don't saturate their home networks anyway, so this may not be a problem for you.

It's bigger, noisier, and slower than anything you'd buy today, but it has flashing lights and it's manageable, so you can have fun with that.

Won't this hub (I think we used to call them MAUs) work with Token Ring if you have the proper baluns?

No. Token ring connectors do include RJ-45, but it's an entirely different signalling scheme. (And the pinouts are different, too.)

Shows you how much I remember from the mid-eightied!
I think I still have a couple of 16/4 Token Ring adapter cards packed away in the basement. On of them is even for an MCA IBM PC.

So it's really old hub that would probably do fine for a home PC. Only catch - It's probably going to be so loud that it'll keep the neighbors up and it's going to use up enough electricity to pay for a cheapo Linksys 100BaseT switch in about 6 months. Don't bother. Old junk like this just isn't worth using anymore.
