Alabama, isn't that the one with Helen Keller on it? They couldn't think of anything better to represent their whole state?

Most state quarter designs suck because the states believe their quarter should be an advertisement for their tourism industry. The Mint got so tired of being abused for modifying the "approved" designs the states send in, they now tell the states to just suggest a theme, and not provide actual pictures. That way the Mint can do what they want without anyone complaining that their design was butchered by the Mint.

A guy I know has designed a couple of state quarters and has some great designs which didn't get selected. If you want to see some cool designs, check them out here.
