Actually NM, I think I may have been getting mixed up, the incident I had in mind was football now that I think about it. Though, there are lot of pro fighters that are not very nice to their wives...

Yes that is true.

I was more wondering about the too soon question.

If you aren't getting paid, then you aren't really a professional.

Besides, volleyball is a joke. To be in the top 1% of that sport is to be better than 14 other people who care.

They get paid, just only if they are literally the top tandem / team in the sport. Especially, women's volleyball. It is such a minor sport, there is virtually no money.

You need to define what the "worst" is but I would say CB in the NFL. It is the most athletic position in the NFL imo

nose tackle. you get mauled every time and you don't even see what is happening; also, nobody thinks you're cool.

how about marshals in auto racing? club members volunteer (unpaid) to risk their lives at national and international events so mountains of money can pass through everyone else's hands.

Yeah, being a career catcher would seem like it would would suck. That much crouching for that long...knees = destroyed. Plus you get the chance of being whacked in the head with a bat. Have to concentrate on something coming at you at close to 90MPH. Plus you are one of the only guys on the team that has any sort of physical contact and basically have to barricade yourself when defending the plate to take the contact.

That's one of the guys in baseball that really earns his money.

OP has to define "worst"

Most physically punishing? NFL RB
Most physically enduring and grueling? MLB Catcher

Uhhhh they can't do that anymore.

Ok. I haven't watched professional baseball in years. So no clue on the rule change. Rest still holds true. Their knees have to be sawdust by the age of 40. Not that it's much better for a lineman in the NFL getting into and popping out of a stance...but they aren't doing it near as much and for as long as a catcher.

team level professional cyclist. They run in the wind the whole race so the star can sprint at the end.

Special teams players have it worse than RBs. Gunners always get concussions. I played ST in JC and I am still sore.
I cringe when I see what those special teams players do on kickoffs and punts.

NFL offensive lineman is probably one of the worst from a pay and fame sort of perspective. Unless your an elite center your pay will suck compared to everyone else. Plus nobody knows who you are. Even the kicker and punter on your team are more recognizable. The only time an announcer calls your name is if you miss your block and the quarterback gets sacked. You could make 50 perfect pancake blocks in a row but they call your name only if you got beat.

But like others said MLB catcher is the worst from a physical toll standpoint.

Except, the minimum anyone in the NFL can make is over $400k per year. That is a lot. That is certainly not bad in any meaningful way.

Something that's dangerous and doesn't pay well, which rules out all the major professional sports.

Like one of those Red Bull mountain bikers or something. They crash and break crap and don't earn much cash. Maybe a motocross guy.
I think that their attitude is "sweet! I get to do it again! And, holy cow! I don't even have to pay for my own transportation!" You don't think Travis Pastrana jumped out of an airplane without a parachute because of the money, do you?

Boxer, their entire job is to get punched a bunch of times, and also to punch a bunch of times. Absolutely pummels the brain and body.

Actually, center, elite or not, is one of the lower paid positions in the NFL. Otoh, an elite right tackle, the guy who protects the QB's blind side, gets paid fairly well.

Worst professional sports position? That's easy, Rodeo Clown.

I've heard people describe playing rb in the nfl is akin to being in car crash for most carries

As a unit, the offensive line gets the most injuries. The reason is that they get rolled up from behind a lot. A blocker can ge engaged with a defender when the RB and defenders come down on his legs from behind. A retired All Pro OL from my school can only sleep 3-4 hours at a time. He's had over 20 operations. In football, the plays that often hurt are not the most dramatic ones. If a WR gets blasted in open field his body moves away from hit in open space. In a pile, someone can hit you when your body cant move and you absorb the full shock (often while in awkward psoition). The WR knocked into a somersault gets big reaction from crowd but he usually walks away ok. The OT who had a pile of porkers fall on his ankle doesn't get noticed but he will end up with more injuries
