Holy $#!T where are the New Yorkers?! Sorry Freejack, Harriman is too far off to count. ;)

I think the worst to drive on is the FDR bordering Manhattan island. Tight lanes and windy turns with people going either 30 or 60mph - makes for a treacherous drive. When there's traffic on it, you'll be there for a while with all the onramps along the way. And don't forget about the left-lane exits and entrances. Heh, at least it's paved well - I'll give them that.

Another bad one is the Belt Pkwy around Brooklyn. Not even the LIE (I-495) is that bad. It can be 9am or 7pm on a Sunday and there'd still be traffic. Weekdays? Forget it.

H1, H2 and H3 were referred to as Interstates when I was there.
Have they been designated as something else since?

Well they aren't popularly called "interstates" although they are part of the US Federal Interstate Freeway System. Locals just call them H1, H2 and H3 with the "H" standing for hell at Rushour (and you thought the 'H' stood for 'Hawaii'). :D

80/88 can get bad here in chicago.

The Elgin-O'hare is a dream. Nothing like hopping on at 8 am and doing 80-95 with traffic to 290. @90 north got bad with the construction though. winter and construction. the 2 Chicago seasons.

Yes, I have been 'trapped' on the H-3 a few times, so I had to drive all the way down to kaneohe just so I could turn around...:disgust: Oh and the H-1 is pretty bad too

At least it is a quick turn-around (24-hours a day). Try doing a quick anything on the Pali or Likelike.

A FEW times? I did it ONCE. :D

And you guys on the West side gotta love Farrington 'deathtrap' Highway.

Strange - We take the Southern State into the Belt every time we go to AC or the Jersey Shore, and rarely hit any major delays, although we usually hit the start of the Belt (at the Queens/Nassau line) at @ 10AM on a Tuesday or Wednesday)
I always thought the BQE and Cross Bronx were worse than the Belt.

DFW: 121 and/or 35N going towards Denton. An accident on either of these two highways where its 2 lanes both ways stops all traffic for a good 2-3 miles.

Hwy 494.

Yup. The southern stretch (in Bloomington) just doesn't have the capacity to accommodate the volume. But the north end of the same loop, I-694, is a horribly designed nightmare. With all the weaving and lane crossing, it's like it has an effective capacity of one lane in each direction. It's simply poor.

I've noticed it's gotten worse and worse. My gf lives in Brooklyn and I'm coming from Nassau almost every week. Also my co-worker has to come into the office past 10am to Nassau from Brooklyn because rush-hour is impossible. He leaves around 6 or 7pm every night just to avoid the traffic then also.

I thought it was the 405 also... especially from the valley coming through lax, but after driving through the 101 on a friday afternoon, 405 is nothing.

My ratings are:

1. 101 from studio city down to the 10
2 . 110 from the 10 up to pasadena
3 . 405 around UCLA area ANYTIME of the day, week, year.
4. 57/5 intersections area in orange county.

I used to think it was the 405 but since i dont drive it that much anymore...the 10 is pretty freaking bad!

but i think the 405 was rated the most congested freeway in the nation...it intersects with practically every other freeway in LA from the 101, to the 10, to the 105, to countless other ones....

880 From Oakland to San Jose. It's REALLY bad when you get down to Brokaw Road when it changes into 2 lanes. That place is backed up like a mofo at like 3pm.

You live in NYC... don't you have decent transit options? Hell I live in a city of 3M (Montreal) and traffic isn't that bad and people take transit to work anyways cause it's decent for that (if not much else ;p).

Here in the Chicago area, we have two seasons: Winter and road repair. If they aren't plowing the roads or saturating them with road salt, they are tearing up the roads that they just resurfaced a year earlier with the typical shoddy, POS, low bid, last a year contractors.

I'd say that the worst has got to be around 290 and 294. They call it the "Hillside Strangler" because it merges a bunch of roads into just a couple of lanes at one point. Also, because it's near Hillside. Heh.

I personally hate being anywhere near 90 coming out of Chicago heading toward O'hare and then out west towards Rosemont, Shaumburg, etc..

Living in Baltimore and commuting to N. Virginia, Washington, and Philly I get to see all of the bad roads. My least favorites are I-70, I-695 Baltimore Beltway, I-495 Capital Beltway (don't ever drive 495 during rush hour going towards Rockville. It will take at least an hour), I-66 (if Microcenter wasn't off 66, I would avoid that road completely), and I-95 Philly (speed limit 65? Hah! Yeah right).

People in NYC do have great transit options. But I'm on Long Island and we do go to the city a lot... just can't get there via mass transportation unless we take the long island rail road (LIRR)... and nobody does that on weekends. ;) Besides, you'd have to drive just to get to the LIRR stations. Anyway, once in NYC, I'd much rather take the subway, believe me.

d(I)e-95 from Port Saint Lucie south in S. Floriduh! No where else in the US even begins to compare.

Somebody mentioned I-35 In Kansas City!!!! That is only bad signage (probably due to the democrats lowering the bar for high school students being able to graduate without being able to read and write), not a hard or dangerous road to drive at all!!!!! Just be glad to live in the KC area, one of the best kept secrets in the US.

Hmm... toss-up around here, they all suck (although not as bad as Seattle or LA :p )

I would have to say either the US 26 west of Portland (known as the Sunset freeway, it begins/ends at the 405 downtown loop, then a half mile long tunnel, then up/down a 6% grade for 3 miles) or the 5 north of downtown (the mile-long drawbridge across the Columbia River was built in 1917 :Q ). Traffic probably shouldn't be as bad in this little burg as it is, but Metro is stuck on the idea of light rail and mass transit and so our originally well-built freeway system is now inadequate for its current capacity.

Since no Seattle-ites have represented, I'll speak for them (I used to live there). I-5 south of downtown has some of the worst traffic in America. The daily absolute clusterfsck all 30 miles from Seattle to Tacoma is a sight to behold (and avoid).
