Heard on the radio this morning that a kid got suspended from school for bringing in a glass jar as they deemed could be used as a weapon..I think it happened in Richmond, it was on the Russ Parr morning show.

I thought to myself that is totally f*cked up until a listener called in. She was a former teacher and she had to deal with problem students. The students told her that they would kill her and rape her often in front of other adults and once in front of the principal. The students were never disciplined or dealt with..

It is so sad that nowadays you can get suspended from bringing a common day item that can be construed as a weapon(wonder if people started waving their text books in a menacing manner if they would get banned as well) yet verbally communicating threats of rape and murder go unpunished.

If anyone can find the link I would appreciate it

my mom is a 4th grade teacher in northern va.. a few years back she had a student who brought a pellet gun to class (looked like a pistol). the student passed the gun off as a real gun and threatened to kill another student. Anyways.. i'm not sure on all the details, but my mom knew wasnt a real gun and took it away from the kid-- sent him to the principal.... Normally this would have meant automatical expulsion for the student, however the principal didnt want to deal with the media hype of a kid bringing a gun to class.. he didnt want parents to get scared or give his school a bad name.. so nothing happened to the student, he got a verbal warning and that was it. my mom was sooo pissed off that she nearly quit.

The children of today reflect their parents lack of supervisory control. So the home problem becomes the school problem. Way to many parents growing up with their kids. They just don't have what it takes to supervise kids.

Dayum...

What happened with the kid..in-school suspension at least? The principal should be fired for covering that up. Your mom should have leaked that to the local papers. Did the parents do anything to the kid?

the student got 1-2 days suspension for "misbehaving in class"... the parents didnt do anything (from what i understood-- they knew the kid left home with the gun in the mornign and didnt do anything about it.) My mom thought about leaking it to the paper- but never went through with it.

The kids parents should be shot with the pellet gun until they grew some common sense and be forced to take a parenting and smart class

I agree completely with this.... It all starts at home, if the problems there can be fixed, the problems in the schools will get better.

The fear of this stuff has really gone overboard. When I was in high school I used to carry a knife with me every day on my keychain, and in fact I carried a swiss army knife in my pocket for a while too while in middle school (that was cool back then). Now I would have gotten suspended for bringing a deadly weapon to school. Ridiculous amount of fear there.

There is something wrong with the dicipline system now in most schools. My school is by FAR one of the "good" ones, we have very little in terms of violence, drug use, etc. What does piss me off is that I did something stupid, I should have gotten punished for it. I sent out a "forged" email that would look like it was from the principal, saying that the kids in question (my friends) were cought...pleasuring themselfs...in the bathroom. Most of them thought it funny, one opened it up in front of a computer teacher. :Q

Well fine, I should get in trouble for that, but a week's in-school suspention is a little bit harsh. Ah, I did the crime, I'll do the time. Then I find out that the kid who stabbed another kid in the parking lot was suspended for the same amount of time I was, because he had psychological problems...thats bull. He brought a deadly weapon on school grounds, and was suspended out of school for 5 days!!

That angers me

thats nice

my friend in high school got a weeks suspension just because he forged the principles signature and wrote a fake note that the school was letting out early due to the snow. He put it in the teachers mailboxes, it was very funny.

we actually went home early that day anyway:D

This reminds me of a story that my best friend's father (a teacher) used to tell about a principal his family knew when he was a kid.

The principal's office had a big glass partition between it and the school office instead of a normal wall and one day a kid was sent down to the principal's office and started mouthing off to the principal and threatening him. The principal took the kid and shoved him against the glass parition, which shattered and the kid fell backwards into the secretaries' portion of the office. The nest day the principal got a call from the kid's parents...

They asked how much they owed to replace the glass wall.

Today they'd be calling about a lawsuit, shows how far we've slipped.

EDIT: Grammar.

My complaint is they are not strict enough. In middle school I was tortured every day. Sometimes it would happen right in front of teachers but they would do absolutely nothing. If I complained the people picking on me would get a verbal warning at best. It wasn't till high school that the teachers would actually do anything that made a difference.

I think I have one of the most messed up stories of all. One day in home room (in middle school) we had a sub and 3 of the guys in my HR decided to pick on me more than usual. They were throwing stuff at me. After getting hit with one of those huge erasers I couldn't take it any more. I told the sub and he got them to apologize. 2 of them did sincerely apologize but the third (who started it) whispered "sorry sucker". I told the sub that his apology was not acceptable and he took it to the vice principal.

All 4 of us got called down to the office. The VP did some yelling and let the 2 I forgave leave after a minute or two. (here's where it starts getting F!@#$!@ up) Then he starts yelling at the other guy and ME! He told me that if I didn't tell on them for picking on me, that I would be suspended!!!

Overall it felt like I was getting in the most trouble. Good thing the rest of the world doesn't work like that, or else they would throw the victim in jail and let the suspects go free. That VP really had it in for me for some reason. On other occasions (that I don't feel like getting into) I got in trouble when I was the ONLY one who was not causing trouble! I HATE that man so much. I never did anything to him but he was a total @$$ when dealing with me.

Thus ends part one of "Why the school system sucks". As you can see I had a very traumatic middle school experience. Luckily things got a LOT better in HS.

it should be noted in MWink's case that the ass that was throwing crap at him had his car totaled by a now good friend of his (and mine):) Her car was essentially undamaged. what goes around comes around:p

Reason why I love UBC so much more than high school, although I do complain about UBC's other problems. :) At least all students are treated as adults around here.
