Forgive my ignorance, I know little about the military and have the utmost respect for those who have served and are serving. I may get the terms a bit mixed up so bear with me.

There is a little caret like symbol that indicates the rank of the officer. Just what is that caret called? I have seen the word before but cannot recall. I think it started with a "v" but I could be wrong. Here is what I am talking about: pic

Or perhaps what the definition is not restricted to the caret alone but was referring to a general design that would change with an increase in rank. And I don't mean the word "insignia."

Any help would be appreciated!
