I have a chance to get an ATI 9800 Pro for 150 dollars (new), but i havent been keeping up with the latest news on video cards.

what is the best of the best these days?
will an ATI 9800 Pro be able to play half-life 2 and doom3?
how does this card compare to the latest line of video cards?

1. X800XT raw speed and 6800Ultra features and OpenGL speed both over $500
2. Yes, they won't make a game they won't play on almost all hardware..kinda hurts sales. Resolutions and details are another story. Expect no problem 10x12 or 10x7 with max details with 9800pro.
3. About 50-75% as fast as the top cards depending res, games, and details again.

Bottom lin is the 9800pro, especailly at that price point, is the best bang for the buck and is really really still faster than 95% of peoples cards out there. Get it.

what do you mean by 10x12 or 10x7

I think he means 12x10, which would be 1280x1024, a common LCD resolution. 10x7 is 1024x768, a very standard CRT resolution.

My wild guess would be the 256bit, 128MB R9800pro at <$200.
On the nVidia side, I should think the FX5900XT does well.

P.S. please make sure you don't fall into the trap of buying a 128-bit R9800 or R9800SE.

Yes, the additional RAM really gets work in 'Far Cry', already at 1280x1024, if you turn up everything and enable AA. So I agree, it's more 'future proof'. The problem is the price IMO. The 256MB versions come too close to X800, to be truly attractive, IMO. Most recent games are only penalized by 128MB at 1600X1200 with AA. But sure, FC probably points towards what we can expect.

BFG 6800GT OC is a hot item right now going for $399.
They over clock it for you right out of the box, that's why there is the OC after the name.
It performs almost the same as a 6800Ultra for $100 less.
You can get the 6800GT from other vendors for about $339 if you want to save a little and don't care that much about the OC.
Go on www.bfgtech.com and look at the cards.

Hey 5489, PM me with where you are getting a 256MB 9800 Pro, I want to buy one, too. I'll sell my 128MB card to pay for it. 🙂

To answer your question, the 9800 Pro is fully qualified to play all the games out there right now and probably for the next year at least. My card is doing great in MOHAA, UT2K4, Painkiller, and Freelancer. Later this week I'll have Far Cry and CoD to play with, too.

If you plan to play HL2 without skimping on the details too much, do avoid the FX5900 series for your own sanity purposes 🙂
