What is the typical speed in the fast lane on freeways in your area?

See poll. Assume light traffic.

NOTE: This is the actual speed traffic travels at on average, not the legal speed limit.

Edit: added a second poll, to see how they compare :)

Same here.

I think the QEW in Toronto is nuts... everyone is doing almost 90mph.

Usually i get stuck behind some slow wanker who thinks that the left lane is meant to go at speed limit (55). However, i'm usually going 75-80...until i run into another wanker...

Heh. The speed limit on 684 is 55, but the average speed of drivers in the fast lane is 85 during rush hour. Needless to say, that makes for a really BIG speeding ticket if and when the cops decide to pull you over.

Fortunately, the speed limit is going up to 65 soon. I'll give the locals about two weeks before they start doing 90 in the fast lane to compensate :)

Bout 80. I generally am low 80's if it's divided, though often up to 90, and then if it's not divided (with a concrete barrier I mean), then I will go no faster than 80 for long distances, since keeping an eye out for cops for a long duration is a pain.

speed limit = 65 here... I usually go 73. Cut it back to 68 this week because there's supposed to be a major speed enforcement operation here in the next week or so. That means everybody going over whatever speed they decide on is getting a ticket. (I was tipped off to watch out) I've been watching people pass me, thinking, c'mon, get'em!

Posted speed limit on my daily commute is 65. I usually lock in the cruise at 74 and hold it there until my exit. I frequently get passed and also pass a few others. State Troopers typically go after those that are interrupting the normal flow of traffic either too fast or too slow. I have been driving for 21 years and have never been pulled over for speeding.

i avoid the freeway in rushhour traffic, a 20miles commute at 30mph bumper to bumper in the fast lane just isn't a logical way to go. i normally end up going anywhere from 35-75 on a posted 45-50mph road, only two lanes, just depends if i get behind a wanker or someone who's actually driven down the twisty road before.

There is a reason Truck Drivers coming through Atlanta refer to 285 as "The Watermelon 500" If you are in the fast lane and doing 85, move over or your going to get run over by the SUV wielding Soccer Mom who is late for her pedicure and manicure.

ASSUMING LIGHT TRAFFIC.

70-80 in LA area.

on Freeway 10 and 60, ppl generally drives at the 75-80 range.
on 5 and 110 however, you can't get to such speed without being nervous (poor road condition and cops)

on a unrelated note: me and my roomate once tested our cars' top speed on 710 at midnight. :) [not together though]

ODDLY enough,
I just moved to Missouri and found out ppl actually drives FASTER THAN the ppl in LA,.... consider how I drive in LA, I am getting tailgated ALL the time in Springfield, MO. (confused)

on the other hand, when driving thru from Missouri to Memphis, ppl drives SLOW AS HELL... like 70 or under.

I live in Florida where the speed limits on freeways are generally higher, 70mph. I usually drive close to 80 but I've been known to go above 90.

65 mph speed limit. 75 mph speed to keep pace. I-94 and I-55 around Chicago. Radar used by helicopters, so detectors are useless. Been driving 20 years and never been issued a speeding ticket (Knock on wood).

65 is the limit. I do 80 usually, if it's the freeway on the way to school. Going the opposite way (to San Francisco), I usually have to do around 85-90 to keep things moving. I don't enjoy driving excessively fast, but I HATE slow drivers, so I just go into the fast lane and do whatever everyone else is doing.
