What is the tv show "24" about?

I was at my gf's house, waiting for her to get out of the shower, so I turned on the TV and I guess 24 was on at that moment. I was too lazy to change the channel, so I watched it for 15 minutes or so. Then my gf came downstairs and turned it off, and I couldn't have cared less.
