I know that when I get a ground shipment, it normally starts with 1ZExx xxxx xxx xxx xxx, yadda yadda.

Is the format for next day shipments the same or is it different?

It depends of how the airbill was created:

From our software you get the numbers as above (1ZExx xxxx xxx xxx xxx) regardless of the service level (2day, ground, next day, etc.)

The other format is the pre-printed airbills. They look something like: S974 711 051 5 (taken from a 2day, preprinted label)

There may be other formats, those are the two I know.

OK hotshot... dragged out the UPS shipping book we no longer use. The format on those tracking numbers is the same as those from the UPS software:

1Z 1R7 6X3 03 9995 020 5
(fyi, the underlined numbers are the account number of the shipper)

The last format is the one I have for a next day air package a guy sent off to me today.

NFS4,

That is the basic format, but there are variances based on region. For example, here are what the numbers would look like if it came from me.

1z 650e5w 0140 xxxxxx
Next Day Air

1z 650e5w 0240 xxxxxx
Second Day Air

1z 650e5w 0340 xxxxxx
Ground

There are also variations based on whether an adult signature is required and other special handling considerations, as well as whether it is Saver, Early AM, etc.

the database (on line tracking) should show the service level selected as well :)
