what is the tool that one uses to look inside an engine

it looks like a microscope.. you use it through the spark plug hole.. its lighted.. and you can look around to see what is wrong with your engine.

whats that called?

What do you expect to see?

When I turned wrenches any motor I really needed to see inside, was already blown bad enough to warrant a tear down.

The few times I suspected a cracked head or blown gasket, the bore scope was inconclusive. You could easily see the steam cleaned cylinder and combustion chamber indicating coolant leaking in, but not an obvious cause.

i took my car to a mechanic one time to see why my car is lacking in power. He took some over oversized headphones hooked up to large alligator clips, hooked up the clips to various parts of the engine and revved it. I dunno what he was doing or what he got out of that

Listening for engine noises. Each part of the engine makes a specific noise, and it is reather easy to trace a bad lifter down using one.

Theres also a stethoscope type that jsut haas a hollow rod on the end and you can pinpoints noises with.

Work great if you can't tell if the tapping is coming from a bad lifter or a loose timing chain.

You can also use a large screwdriver as a stethoscope to check for various things such as which bearing is going bad. Just place the blade of the screwdriver on the part you want to listen to and stick your ear against the back end of the handle. It works surprisingly well. If you do it against the water pump you can hear the water flowing.
