the problem with the card really is that the drivers haven't matured yet while nvidia has had the 8800 series for 6 month. give it a bit more time. but remember this: the 2900XT only costs $500 while the 8800GTX costs more like $600.

". . and videopho *forget* 64-bit Vista for me ... there is ZERO advantage for a gamer and headaches i don't care to experience"

I've been gaming on x64 for almost 2 yrs now and couldn't be happier.
I expect the Vista 64 be even better.
64 bit will be mainstream within a couple of years or less from now.

The 2900XT never cost 500. :p Its MSRP is 399. There were a few AIB vendors that hit 450, but most have dropped to 410 or even lower. BB had them on sale for 320 recently.

excuse me?!?

this IS my upgrade path - exactly as i spelled it out it my earlier posts and threads .... buy AGP x1950p ... use it in ASrock MB with C2D and DDR2 ... then upgrade to xfire MB and buy a GTS or HDxt

the *only* thing that changed was my timeline .. when i got my 'raise', i no longer needed to wait - or compromise much on HW

to quote you:

now i really believe - next year - when "games demand it" ... we are going to make a JUMP to mainstream multi-core and your GTS and Core2Duo on your BIG displays aren't gonna cut it *either*

so you will upgrade - twice - when i upgrade once

that IS how i look at it

if i guess *wrong* ... then i lose ... but you ARE spending double
for what i also consider an *interim* upgrade

I havent upgraded yet... you upgraded twice :Q.. :D you lost :p

no ... no .. NO ... NO!

you still don't get it ... i *won* ...

--i got a BIG raise at work

now what did i lose?

i think HD2900xt in xfire and C2D clocked over 3Ghz will not have any problem with a big display ... and Crysis - for example

--and a "drop in" upgrade for Penryn ...

... all the "extra stuff" ... the 250GB 'cudas in RAID, extreme CPU cooling and 2 More GB super-fast RAM are something i would do anyway ... even Vista ... eventually

i can just do it now ... and i am really curious about HD2900xt ... i would like to experience the status of the 2900XT firsthand

and i will report back to you guys

win-win

and i sold my ASrock MB for about what i paid for it

Oh, the standard, you know... FEAR has a nice built in test, so that would be a good test. Not sure what else... More than anything, I am trying to get a feel if new drivers have effected the performance or not.

Maybe you could this. Maybe tested it with the origonal drivers(older set) run the benchmark, then update to the newest driver set and run the test again. I would be REAL interested to see if the numbers go up and by how much.

Got my first one today, it will be going in the bad axe 2 for the time being, out come the x1950XTXs...I'll try to get some benches up, but I fly out tomorrow morning for the weekend, so it may have to wait. Next one should be here monday or tuesday, it's with UPS right now.

Anyone know a good V8 board to run with these, I'm thinking this one, plan on migrating them to a dual 5355 box and have everything but a board.

Funny.. I don't even really hear my 2900XT... and the heat it generates mustn't be that much of a problem.. it's in a cramped up case with virtually no ventilation in a hot room.. and it barely pushes past 80..

I am thinking about doing the same thing... Except, I might even go EVEN cheaper and get a E2120 or something... hehe... I dunno though, the whole PSU thingy is holding me up.

huh? what do you mean PSU holding you back ?... you only need a nice 500 watter to run 2900xt or GTX ... i see them for $50 after MiR ... certainly for $75

and i am not so sure about th e2120 ... you need insane clockspeeds to make up for the only 1/4 cache of intel's flagship ... the e4300 can overcome 1/2-the-cache handicap in many benches as it's clockspeed and FSB can be pushed so high ... they are pretty cheap ... less than $120 ... that is why i got the Crucial Ballistix 2 x 1GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) ... AfaiK, it is the same RAM as Dominator 1333 ... pretty damn fast and i won't be needing DDR3 for a long time

i might have a very oc'able e4300 on FS/T in a couple of months, anyway ... Quad-core is where it is going to be at next year
