What is the speed of the Stock Intel Fan on the 2.4b

Thanks Champion for the quick response,

I installed my MB hardware monitoring tools and the fan is running at like 2300 RPM. Though my Processor temps hover around 45-47C. I know these arent terrible temps but you would think it would be enough to get the fan to ramp up, wouldnt you? Am I doing something wrong?

1) Your temps are fine
2) RPM of the fan is based on case temp, not CPU temp.
3) Why spin faster? That just makes more noise. It can go up to ~ 4000 RPM, and is very loud @ that speed.

The fan spins slow and is temp controlled. Feel the heatsink and it will only be a little warm. The P4 runs cool and doesn't need a big loud blower for a fan. If you used the stock heat transfer pad that is on the heatsink, it works ok, but you can improve things by removing it and using some heatsink grease instead. When I install retail P4's, I remove the pad and use standard heatsink compound from radio shack. If you haven't already seen it, check out a message I left for you in the video forum where you responded to someones question re: ATI. Your P4-2.4 and Win98 could have a conflict problem.

Hi Cockeyed,

No I dont beleive my 2.4b and Win98SE have a problem working together. I can run endless loops of Prime95 and 3Dmark2001 never got a crash yet. The problem I talked about in the video card forum is most definitely a monitor syncing problem. For some reason I've always had to use HZtool even with my Nvidia cards or the videocards want to set my monitor at crazy high refresh rates like 170hz. So I just set Hztool to do all the resoultions I want at 85hz and everything works fine. Also that problem I was talking about in the videocard forum doesnt show up until after I install the Radeon drivers. Because when I first install windows it of course wants to run at 640@60 which is perfect for my monitor but as soon as I load the radeon drivers by default they go to 800X600 but my monitor for some reason tells windows that it wants 160+. Of course this scrambles everything a bit until Hztool brings it back down to 85Hz. It was a pain in the A@@. I got to say HZtool is one of the most useful utilities I've ever found on the net. It also fixes the 60HZ problems some people experience in games. Its like having your own tweakable monitor driver or something.

I'm glad my temps or ok. I did use the thermal pad I thought about scraping it off but in the end I didnt. The weird thing is that my temps dont fluctuate near as much as my P3 temps used to. The would run 32C idle but 46C under load this P4 just stays between 44C and 46C no matter what the load. I'm gonna quit worrying about my system its working and if it aint broke dont fix it, right.

Thanks again everyone.

Temp monitoring on every board is different. Some do it fairly well, some do it fairly poorly. Since your temp ranges from 44C - 46C, I'd say yours is the latter. Are you sure the monitoring is set up correctly? A P4 idle/load has much more than a 2C swing.

Hi Oldfart,

As far as I know I'm doing it correctly. I'm using the Soyo Hardware monitoring software that came with my MB. So there is no selecting sensors or anything like with MBM. I thought that the P4s had a built in temperature sensor on the core so the temps would be more accurate then some of the processors that required a thermistor that was under the socket. I definitely hear you about some boards monitoring better than others though. My last machine I built had a Asus CUSL2(nice motherboard by the way), but anyways it was off by 15C. It took them like 3 bios updates before they got it right. MBM 5.0 actually had a setting specifically for my MB and it added the 15C for you on the temps. Well I guess there is no way to know if my new MB is reading correctly. There doesnt seem to be too many people who own this Soyo board. That is the nice thing about buying Abit or Asus at least there will be a lot of people on the forums who have a lot of experience to answer any questions. I'm not experiencing any heat related problems so I guess I should just not worry about it.

My current mobo (Albatron 845PE) has poor temp monitoring. I have an MSI 865PE on the way. From what I read, its even worse. My kids PC has a Soyo TISU that is also poor. The last board I had that did it right was an EPoX 4BDA2+ 845D.
