What is the scariest, worst-case, most extreme scenario you can think of with a party of this persuasion in power?

We all know that the loyal opposition sees doom and gloom from a rule by your party. It doesn't matter what party you are or which way your views lean; somebody considers the fulfillment of your dreams to be their worst nightmare.

Naturally most of the doom and gloom scenarios are exaggerations. But, also naturally, any administration in power is going to have both good and bad things result.

Assume people with your political views are in complete control of the government, super-majority, the whole bit. What comes to your mind immediately are all the benefits, but push that aside and consider, in the most extreme of circumstances, what bad things would come along with that administration.

I like Obama, but I'm not able to vote or be part of a party, but let's consider that. Worse case is that in the face of a dire economy and lots of job losses the gov steps up hugely its theft of money from richer people, giving to the poor and the country's culture, self-respect, and economy become irrevocably ruined.

Nationalization of faltering industries such as the auto industry.

Relaxing penalties for career criminals in the name of equality.

- Increased polarization of education levels (the well-educated get more well-educated) due to putting more control in parental hands
- More limited access to help for those in genuine need

As a mostly left-wing guy who almost always votes for Democrats, here's the worst-case scenario of what I could see happening under that party:

- Increasing taxes on large companies too much, causing job losses which cause more damage than the extra revenue.
- Sweeping gun bans and restrictions, including a permanent return of the assault weapons ban, a ban on high-capacity magazines, and a ban on concealed carry.
- Overadoption of fair trade policies lead to an overall reduction in trade, slowing the economy.
- Increased post-secondary education funding ends up causing "educational inflation" that makes having a bachelor's degree in the future about as useful as having a high school degree today (I don't consider this extremely likely but it's a definite possibility, and we are talking about worst case scenarios here).
- Overall adoption of too many "nanny state" policies that do little other than add layers of wasteful bureaucracy and don't protect anyone. Then again, neither party is really very good about these things - Democrats just want to enact different ones from Republicans. Both of them want to perpetuate the horribly wasteful war on drugs.

As a libertarian I suppose the worst case scenario is that the authoritarians are right and people cannot survive with a nanny state telling them how to live every moment of their lives, after which society breaks down into anarchy.

As a partisan dem, its a fair question. And maybe my worse case scenario is a return to LBJ type giddiness and cranking out legislation, trying to substitute quantity for quality.

Now is exactly the wrong time for that crapola, we need to address fundamental issues, we again face a crisis of the old order, we have patched and repatched the old ways of doing things, but its now clear, that will no longer work. Our balance of trade went South 30 years ago, we are slaves to foreign oil, our natural resources are dwindling, we have allowed our manufacturing base to collapse, our imports are out of control,
and we have allowed our bankers to bet our life's savings in an international gambling casino while we are addicted to a debt supply that will dry up if we don't straighten up our act.

Unless we, both democrats and republicans, come together, and address those issues, nothing else matters.

We do need a project for a new American century, just not the neocon version that can only serve as a negative barometer.

2nd amendment gets more abuse
Poor continue to live off the government tits instead of getting jobs. If they don't want to work, then fuck em, let em starve to death.
Government spends too much money on health care and shit like that and not enough on infrastructure.
Violent Criminals get out of shorter jail terms and commit more crimes.
Too much emphasis on "green" with not enough on "cost effectiveness" and even more jobs go overseas.

short-term
- economic depression
- problematic handling of wars in middle-east

long-term
- dramtic revision of immigration laws that let in so many central and south americans (in the future) that the culture of the US is dramatically changed such that the US becomes more like central and south america (lagging on world stage, high social inequality with mixed-race lower classes and white minority upper class)
- overzealous regulation that leads to less economic growth in the future

PS I don't think this will happen, except maybe the immigration stuff. The long-term stuff is more likely than the short-term stuff.
