Real scary movies are psychological thrillers like "The Mothman Prophecies" & "What Lies Beneath"

Those were quite good. Esp Mothman... Lame gory/bloody movies aren't really scary (Saw, etc...)

The Nightmare Before Christmas
Ferngully

After those two, I have never by choice watched a horror movie.

I wouldn't call a lot of the gore-fests of today proper scary movies. They're suspenseful because you wonder in what gory, unexpected way the person is gonna die, but that's all they got.
Good, scary horror comes from the unknown.

I'm not saying I've seen a lot of horror, but The Ring does a good job in that regard. But I wouldn't recommend it, because you've probably heard a lot about it, and it's been satirized enough times to make it seem funny when you actually watch it.

Go with one of the movies that you've never heard of.

Suspenseful yes. But scary? Exactly how scary are aliens who can be defeated by lobbing water balloons at them?

Howard the Duck

Scariest movie I've ever seen. Watched it when I was 10-12 or so. Haven't watched another scary movie since.

Yes, the ending is a bit disappointing, but the movie itself is still very good. I would edit out that spoiler though, guranteed to ruin it for others.

Me too!
I remember at the end of the movie, after the big battle, when Howard has some dust or something stuck in his throat, and he has that deep 'bad guy' voice, I was thinking, "Noooo, Howard, not you too!!"
I was terrified :p
