What is the point of sealing records for years or decades?

I read this article and saw number 1. which got me curious. Then I remembered that a lot of the information relating to the JFK assassination was also sealed.

I'm don't mean to propagate conspiracy theories but what's the point of sealing records unless there may be something to cover up or keep hidden?

Sealing records is all about protecting people involved, either from reprisals from 3rd parties, future discrimination, etc. In juvenile cases its all about protecting them from themselves - if they make a mistake while young that it doesn't haunt them for life.

In regards to the JFK case, its all about protecting the powers that be from reprisal or prosecution by the public :)
