It's for your gag reflex. If something too solid gets that far, your body tries to get rid of it by gagging. Telling you to chew your damn food properly. Or stop smoking pole. Either one.

maybe you just confused it with vulva?
 
Actually, the uvula seals off the nasopharynx during speaking and swallowing. When you say the letter M, your nasal passage is open. Now say E, and you will notice it closes off. Also, it's useful when swallowing, so you don't get liquid in your nose. Sometimes when you laugh, you force it open, and milk can come out your nose.
