What is the purpose of the BMW X3?

I saw one in the dealership this weekend and was totally unimpressed.

It costs almost as much as the X5, the interior is horrible (try closing the door), mileage is terrible (16/23), is not attractive IMO and I'm guessing the performance isn't great.

What was the purpose of creating this car when it costs almost as much as the X5?

Anyway, an X3 and an X5 out the door will cost entirely different amounts. I agree that it's not your typically impressive BMW for all that $$$.

BMW wouldn't create a vehicle unless they think there is a market for it. Take the 5 series wagon for example. I think BMW was trying to aim the X3 at the younger croud. But yeah, it's an expensive lil ah heck. I'd rather get something else for that much, perhaps the full size X5 for a few more.

it's to give BMW a player in the small SUV segment (land rover's freelander, subaru forester, RX330, Infinity FX35, etc). It's wedges in between the 3 series wagon and the X5 (not in terms of price).

And it doesn't cost as much as an X5.

It comes with a diesel. It has my vote. We need more oil-burners over here. 30 mpg with the diesel and it's just as quick as the gas motor.

No, it's priced to compete with the Jeep Grand Cherokee and similar SUV's (around $30k). It has the same wheelbase as the X5, just a little shorter and narrower. I think it'll sell well.

The X3 3.0 I looked at had a sticker price of $42K+. You can get a base X5 for cheaper.

Having those 2 models so close together in price is ridiculous.
