What is the purpose of the administrative shares in Win2k?

the C$ is so the drives will be hidden from anyone just browsing your computer, but you can still map the drives to people who want access to it....it's just not visible from network neighborhood.
It's mostly a security issue so that the average joe doesn't find your harddrive mess around and screw it up.

So it's just a more secure way of mapping drives than the standard Win9x add-a-folder-to-the-network-neightbourhood?

But assuming I don't want any of my drives shared in anyway (except to people on my computer) should I disable the C$ shares?

You can't disable the C$ shares, all you can do really is make sure you have a good password on your administrator account, since this is the password they need to acccess those shares.

Oh
well then
I suppose that's why they are called administrative shares
:D

That's fine, no one else has my password...and if they can guess it they are welcome to my files lol.

actually you can unshare the C$ shares

generally I just create a second share.. switch to the C$ share options.. then the chose to unshare it will be there.. unshare C$.. then go back and unshare the other one.. then neither is shared out

administrative shares are used by administrators so that they can make changes to your drives without having to get out of their chair.
