I've never really understood why people would wear these.

Maybe it's just your upbringing. My father never wore one.

Insulation in cold climates perhaps.

To keep me from seeing your fat santa belly through your kmart business attire.

I guess I can kinda understand that, from the days of stricly white dress shirt wearing people... Still seems kinda silly.

so your sweat and bodily juices don't get on your nice dress shirt.

Is that really plausible? I mean if you sweat that much it would likely just soak through anyway. Why does it matter if it gets on the shirt? You'll just wash it anyway.

Thats why I wear 'em, I get sweaty in the summer. It actually saves me on laundry too, I just change my underwear, socks and undershirt every day and I wear the rest of the stuff 1-3 more times. I only need like 3 outfits to get me through a week.

I don't like the feel of a dress shirt. Also good for providing extra nipple coverage through thinner shirts.

Keep your sweat and antiperspirant from ruining your dress shirts. My spouse refuses to wear them, and the underarm area of his shirts (wears them to work every day) look awful.

I wear them under sweaters to prevent the itchiness inherent in sweaters. Same goes for dress shirts.

Ewww! I wear each shirt once and once only, before washing it.

Hmmm... I've never had that problem...

Never noticed itchy-ness with dress shirts. I refuse to wear sweaters. ;)

Hey I resent that too. Some of us are more big boned than others. And some of us big boned people are really big boned! ...and some of us have 300 pound bones. :(

=======================================

It really only became a problem when we started ironing them regularly. When we pull them out of the dryer and hang them up right away without ironing, it wasn't that big of a problem. I think the heat from the iron somehow makes the armpit area bleach out (dark shirts) or turn yellow (white shirts).

Many reasons already stated:
1. Sweat stains eventually build up - 3 for $9.99 undershirts are much cheaper to replace
2. Don't have to wash/iron nice shirts/sweaters as much b/c you don't sweat on them b/c you undershirt catches the sweat
3. Thin dress shirts looks ridiculous without an undershit as you can see nipples and every other imperfection under the skin
4. Can prevent the ichyness of a sweater
5. Keeps you warmer in the winter :)
6. Keeps you cooler in the summer ;)
7. If all of a sudden you need the casual look, you just take off your outershirt and boom, your casual
