Hi guys,

I am gonna buy this board (MSI nf4 ultra) tomorrow due to the recommendations made from my friends.

But I was wondering what is the power requirement for this board ?

I know that another nf4Ultra board, the DFI one, needs a lot of power (in their official forum, they said it needs 480W as the basic requirement). How about MSI ?

thx all

Basically any GOOD, RELIABLE, BRAND NAME, 24 PIN PSU will do. That said, I usually recommend a OCZ PowerStream 520W with a single large 12V rail, or one of the Enermax Noisetaker ATX 2.0 12V PSUs with a 420W rating or higher. Best of breed for the money in the Noisetaker line is IMHO the 485W Noisetaker with dual 12V rails, and Active PFC--it is quiet, has EMI filtration, adjustable fan speed, fan speed monitoring, braided cables, plenty of connectors, and 80% efficiency, which makes it easier on the electric bill. The OCZ PowerStreams are also very good, but are at about 63% efficiency--but are awesome for extreme overclocking.

The new Antec Sonata II has a PSU capable of handling this motherboard as well. It seems to be a decent PSU.

Basically, the PSU is something you do NOT want to skimp on. There are many problems that you can stop before they start by using a high quality and strong PSU.

Edited to say that your MSI board is not "out of the box" unusual for power requirements per se, and is probably much more tolerant than any SLi board. The aforementioned PSU's are pretty much standard for builds that I do with the EPoX 9NPA+ Ultra, which I cannot imagine being any more or less like the MSI in regards to power needs. I even have one EPoX board running with one of the lower-end 420W Enermax Noisetakers, but the system is only running a Venice 3000+, and 6600GT with one SATA HDD. No serious power needs there. If I was to have built that system with a FX-55 and 6800GT, then I would have gone with the 485W Noisetaker as described, or the OCZ 520W PowerStream.

Just get a $40 350-450 watt PSU and it will be fine unless you have a monster video card and are trying to get a 50% overclock.

Things to look for:

1. Weight, it should be close to 5 pounds if it has decent heaksinks.
2. Big single fans {120mm} are the new trend with lots of honeycomb venting, runs quiet runs cool.
3. overvoltage, overcurrent, overtemperature protection

Don't want to spend big bucks then try one these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817182013

Buy cheap, get cheap.

Anyway, it will be your problem if you just put a crappy underpowered PSU that will fail and have your computer to crash or freeze.

If the PSU only have 4 connector for HDD, then dont get it... I suggest something higher than 400W, branded from a good brand. Antec, thermaltake, Fortron, Enermax,..

Yes, it might cost 10 or 20$ more, but really worth it. Stable current is the key to stable and reliable system...

What about the cheap 450w I got that fail to start a nforce3/A64 3000+ system that a good branded 300w PSU just run it happily?
