What is the proper way to set up surround sound speakers? (Where does the rear right go?)

Does the rear right speaker go on the right when I am facing it, or, does it go on the left side which makes in behind my right side when I am sitting away from it?

I ask because I ran a speaker test last night and when it would do the rear right/left channel the opposite side would sound..

How I have it now:

(front left) (pc) (front right)
---------------chair-------------
(rear right) ---- (rear left)

It's on the right/left hand side when you are facing it but now when your back is away from it...

You've got it wrong...

LOOK AT THE SCREEN.

Now...Every speaker is realtive to your dicrection and position The rear-right speaker, for example, will be to YOUR rear and to YOUR right.

QUote from PS2 article:
Rule 4: The Left Surround and Right Surround speakers are the most difficult speakers to place (because they must be behind you), and they are also the most important to place properly, as they are responsible for creating the surround sound experience. Make sure that the Left Surround speaker is behind you on your left side, and the Right Surround speaker is behind you on your right side.Ideally, the surround speakers should be the same distance apart as are the Left and Right speakers in the front.

And some of the movies that are THX certified are coming with a THX Optimizer on the DVD. Star Wars does, Count of Monte Crisco does, not sure which others. THey have an audio test that will go around the room and play things so you can make sure they are properly placed. It's a bit more advanced that the "Test Sounds" most receivers put out.

The video tests are cool too.

Hey now.. it said right so I put it on my right when I was facing it. Plus with the way the sub is set up I need to cross the wires across each other to get it to be right!
