What is the point of dvd region encoding?

Because of different release dates for the same movie in different countries 🙂
 
The fact that you can get a legal DVD in China for 7$ street, and that's the roof. They want to be able to price differently and not have people import across the planet trying to get the best deals.

I've haven't seen a region-free stand-alone DVD player in a long long time. But, the MPAA has workaround by using "enhanced" content that foils region-free DVD's. Its called Region Coding Enhancements.

I think region encoding boils down to piracy. I think the MPAA is so paranoid (just like the RIAA) that they put region encoding on discs. That is only my opinion.

MPAA is the only reason. They weren't content enough with simply PAL, NTSC, and SECAM. They thought it needed to be mixed up even more.

They are perfectly legal to be sold here, dont know about the states though...

RCE? PAH! thats nothing. My Phillips DVD711 is about 2.5 years old and does all regions based on disc region automatically, handles ALL RCE and other 'tricky' discs, my TV handles NTSC if I need it and I can even update the firmware with a CD-R.

All this with a simple IR hack from my Palm.

I see them all the time in broadcast catalogs. I also have a Dell GX270 that shipped with a regionless DVD+R at school.
