What is the point of a DNS suffix?

I know what it is, but I don't understand what the point is. I am setting up my computers with Static IPs to make port forwarding easier, the one setting I don't understand is DNS Suffix. The DHCP set it to launchmodem.com so that is what I am setting it to, but what is the point?

It's the namespace that you belong to.

I can't find "YourComputer" on the net. There is no place to register it in DNS.

I can find "yourcomputer.domain.com" by querying around until I find who owns "domain.com" right?

For a small home network this really doesn't make much difference at all. So I guess the answer to your question is kind of "there is no point".
