I hope this has not been discussed before as I did not do a search.

Anyhow, I was just sitting here wondering how long my iMac and iPod touch from early 08' are going to last.

My Applecare on the iMac is going to run out in May and I just used it for the first time, they replaced the optical drive. So on May 5th the iMac will be 3 years old. Since it is my first Mac I am making myself keep it until it dies.......which hopefully lasts a few more years. Id be happy with 5 years.

What is the oldest working Mac and/or Apple iPod that you own?

thanks

I've got a Blue & White G3 that is upgraded to a 450MHz G4. I haven't used it in quite a while, but it still works, and I mostly keep it around for running OS9 stuff.

I still have my first-gen MacBook (2006 model, Core Duo) although I recently replaced it with a 2011 MBP. The MB was my daily driver up through October.

I also have a first-gen iPod Nano (2005 model, black, 4GB). It still works, although the battery life isn't great. I can get a few hours out of it, but it won't last much more than that. Of course that doesn't matter when it's plugged into the car.

Sawtooth (AGP Graphics) PowerMac G4/400 from around 1999 or so. It works, but I don't use it for anything anymore. Also have a Mac Mini G4 1.25 from 2005 that mostly works (the Airport/Bluetooth riser card died so gotta go wired) and is only borderline useful as an everyday desktop, even just for checking email and facebook.

I decided that if my phone can do more than the computer, the computer gets retired.

1.5 GHz G4 PowerBook 12"
2.0 GHz 2006 15" MacBook Pro
30GB 5.5 Gen iPod Video (it wasn't called the Classic until Gen 6)
iPhone 1
1.4GHz Core 2 2010 11" MacBook Air

So, stuff that is anywhere from 8 years to 1.5 years old.

Motorola Starmax. IIRC, it's the 5000 model with a 200ghz PowerPC. Even has a 3D Rage II+ GPU. This things circa 1997. I wonder if the legit Mac clones have any value today. We used to have a Macintosh LCIII up until recently. I think my parents chucked it though.

The oldest iDevice I own is a fifth gen Classic. Had been sitting in the lost and found at work for ages, broken, so I took it home and fixed it.

Well I picked up my iMac today, for the heck of it I asked what an optical drive repair would have run me if I did not have Applecare, he said about $300, so Apple service is not cheap!
So even though this is the first time I have used my Applecare for a repair, this one repair totally paid for my Applecare which has ~3 months left on it.. I think I paid like $200 for the Applecare ~3 years ago.

So my Applecare runs out in May, I hope she holds up for another 2 years or so because id like to stay with Apple. I paid like ~$1700 for my iMac with the Applecare so I do not think 5 years is too much to ask for....yes it does get used 3-5 hours daily but still I think a PC nearing two grand should last 5 years or better, 5 years would be ~$340 a year.

Well, you are sort of at the mercy of the components. The moving parts (optical drive, hard drive) are the weakest links. If the hard drive goes out, there's nothing that Apple could have done to prevent it (there are only a few HDD manufacturers in the world, and Apple has to use one of them).

Did the Applecare tech do a full diagnostic, including SMART analysis of your hard drive? It might not hurt to find a SMART program and check on your hard drive's status.... if it's showing errors, maybe take it back in for a replacement before your Applecare expires. If your HDD is still in good shape after almost 3 years, I'd imagine that it'll last out the rest of the 5 years just fine.

The good thing is that the optical drive replacement probably came with a good cleaning of the inside of your iMac. I've never opened one up myself, but I'd imagine that it can get a little dusty. Dust insulates heat, causing more heat buildup and premature failure of components. (Rare but possible. Never hurts to be clean.)

Overall I'd say that, barring the hard drive, there is little reason to think that your iMac might not last 5 years.

I have a Performa 200 in the garage. I am having a problem with the screen, but it does boot up. I am going to sell it at my next garage sale.

I still have an 30 GB iPod Photo... Wikipedia says that I got it new around 2004.

Do I still use it? Nope... that's what smartphones are for now.

late 2008 unibody aluminum macbook C2D 2.0, this is the only computer I own at the moment and the longest I have ever kept a system around.

I also have a work provided 13" MBA with the i7 upgrade (highest spec), to be honest it doesn't feel that much faster than my macbook since I added a SSD to it.

My oldest currently is my Oct. '10 iMac. My older ones have either been decommissioned or given to other people. The oldest one that I had that's still being used by someone is my old '07 Macbook Pro.

I think I still have an Apple llc in the garage.
As for iPod, I still have a G1 iPod in my desk which I use to FireWire booting/utility drive.

iPod mini from back when Apple wasn't suing everyone and their dog.
I like it, built like a tank, fell on my bike and slid on it once, shorts torn, body bruised, player had some scratches on the metal, but worked just like new. Still have it in my car.

Still have my venerable 2000 iMac G3 that I found by the side of the road about 5 years ago and nursed it back to life. I also had a Mac Classic, another roadside find, still working perfectly but it got thrown out while cleaning up from a nasty flood.

Did you get the dual CPU upgrade for the Cube?
I have two Cubes. One I kept the G4 450 but added a GeForce 6200. The other I added single Sonnet G4 7447 1.7 GHz, and added the same GeForce 6200. The GeForce 6200 is a PC card flashed with a Mac firmware. Speeds up these Cubes tremendously, which with the G4 1.7 makes running 10.5 actually feasible. Strangely enough though I do have 10.5 on the G4 450 as well. I just liked the fit-and-finish of the OS better than 10.4.

The G4 450 is sllllooooooooowwwwww of course. The G4 1.7 is OK, until you try to run anything with Flash or video. I used to have them as guest PCs, but now have a dual-core Atom machine running Win 7 in the guest room.

BTW, I find using G4s kinda painful these days, mainly because of the issues with video and Flash. However, otherwise, they actually decent. However, I find G3s basically completely unusable. In fact, the last G3 I had I sold way back in 2002, because it was too slow for my preferences. Almost a decade ago!

i have a few original iPods, and 1 each of 5.5gen 80 GB and 5th gen 60 GB. i mainly use the larger ones, but the originals still work.

home iMac is the 17in white Core 2 Duo model, upgraded the internal HD from 160 GB to 1.5 TB and maxed the RAM at 4 GB (3 recognized), it's been very reliable.

Blue and white G3 thats just for show in the LR. Used to be a real workstation for years and years, now too slow for anything but looks Wife has an iMac (2000 or so) in the bedroom for DVD's.
I had a PowerPC mac 9600 attached to a massive HP scanner for YEARS that I used for photo print scanning.

Love those 9600's. I had an 8600 for a couple of years before I traded it and a couple of other PPC Macs to a guy for my G3. If I could find one, I'd get another one in a heartbeat. Just a beautifully designed computer. The 8500/9500 (based on the Quadra 800 case) is another classic design that I wouldn't mind owning... I had an 8100 for a while. I went through a lot of older Macs when I was in college and I'd find them littering the hallways of various campus buildings :)
