What is the oldest (least bloated) ICQ that works correctly?

For years I had used ICQ 98a because it was nice and small and simple and had no newbie garbage in it. Then my brother wants 99b which ok good enough cause it's not that much worse than 98a, and I like being able to type long messages if nothing else.

But now, when someone tries to add me to their contact list, it asks for my authorization even though I have it set so EVERYONE CAN FREELY ADD ME. So even though I click authorize and keep clicking it when they send requests, they don't actually get authorization because I don't really have it on in the first place. So in the end, people can't add me to their list anymore lol.

And I can't change my preferences or security settings (perhaps if it was actually set to authorize, ppl could add me when I authorized them).

I guess it's because ICQ is trying to force people to upgrade to newer versions.

So does 2000 work okay? I'd say it just gets worse with each new version so would 2000 be the best choice? It has banners though right?

I use Miranda. Makes ICQ usable once again.

After boycotting ICQ for over one year and using MSN Messenger exclusively, I now use both.

Wow Miranda ICQ is very nice now. Quite a few months ago when I tried it, it was useable, but didn't quite have the features I wanted. But now it seems to have most everything that is useful and still very quick and small.

And had someone test it... they added me without problems (none of this authorization crap). Woohoo. Thanks.

Oh yah, in the case I did want it to ask me for authorization for people to add me, is there an option for that in Miranda, or is it ONLY anyone can freely add me?

I tried Trillian fairly recently, and it's good, except I only use ICQ and it seems kinda big and stuff. I like a very small footprint on my desktop, so just something simple and for ICQ only is all I need. Also, didn't AOL end up being able to block Trillian? Hope they don't do it to Miranda ICQ!

I'm got some cool plugins now... I love this thing, I'm pumped about it lol.

The newest version of Trillian gets around the AOL block. AOL hasn't been able to come back with a new block for about 2 months now.
