What is the next new...

Revolutionary GPU...discuss. Or did it just come out? I have been holding onto my 5850 forever, and haven't felt the need to upgrade since it plays everything pretty smoothly...but i am getting that itch!

You know, the type of GPU that will last you 3 years! Especially considering the number of new game engines that are coming out that are undoubtedly going to stifle cards...Anyway, that is all. Oh, and i'm usually in the 300 to 400 dollar range on a GPU.

Well, next generation of GPUs should be coming in 2014.
Meaning DX12 or shader model 6 capable cards.
From nvidia the GPU is called Maxwell, not sure what the AMDs GPU is called.

Last time such change happened was with Fermi and 4xx series.

The latest newest thing is the Gtx 780, but not the 770 or lower cards which are rebadged 600 cards. Though technically the 780 is a rebadged Titan, but at a much more reasonable price and only slightly removed from Titan's launch.

Wait till the new Xbox and PS hit and games start getting ported over. I think 2014 will be far more revealing. Yeah the 780's the flavor of the day but its pretty weak only barely beating 1.5 year old cards by 20-30% and its a year late to the party. 20 nm and let's see how much ram they have/need. Right now is about the worse situation to buy as we're looking at next gen in approx. half a year along with the new consoles and some big titles.

The 780's priced as if it were actually released a year ago which is just asf backwards and gouging without competition so I wouldn't go so far as to call it the next big thing.

Yeah that was kind of my thinking, i have been trying to wait for a this next generation of consoles to come out to drive new engines for better looking games, and hopefully making good use of a next gen card.

I'm just scared that the new engines will be so powerful that they will choke my brand new card when i get one! Probably won't, but it's a small fear i have.

Memory is going to be the killer. Today's cards--especially the 770 with 2GB and the 670/680 they're based off of--are going to have a very limited shelf-life as high end once ports from 8 GB consoles start rolling in.

Thing is, I'm not sure the Radeon 7970/Geforce 780 and their 3GB is going to be much better off. I think it will be similar to how cards go obsolete a couple years after a new DirectX shows up. Whereas we've been pretty lucky in the last few years.

I think 4 GB and especially 6GB cards should be well suited for next gen ports, though.

Ya I really want a 7970 now but it's like I'm already figuring out how to sell it and how to make as much cash as possible with bitcoin/litecoin mining because next gen is going to be crazy I feel like. We'll all be saying "but does it run Xbox1/PS4 ports?" Or at least that's how I feel. I'd hate for next gen to be completely underwhelming but sometimes I get the feeling that Xbox1/PS4 games will be nothing but disappoint when we see them. Maybe E3 will be more revealing though?

I think E3 would be the time for us to figure things out.

Will the PS4 and Xbox be using DX11?

They're confirmed to be using DX11.1 class hardware. Microsoft will obviously use a DirectX that's closer to the metal, whereas Sony's low level API is called LibGCM

I'll be very disappointed if DirectX 12 doesn't come in 2014. It just feels like the time is right for DX12 to come into the picture-

If DX12 does come out next year, do you think Windows 7 will support DX12? I really don't want to upgrade to Win 8.

The PS4 and xbox one are already using outdated tech. Really the Titan and the 7xx series are the best we are going to see for awhile. AMD has settled on being a mid to low end supplier so don't expect much there.

It may be Windows 9 you'll need to update to if you want DX12😉

I'd guess Windows 7 is probably "done" at this point, seeing that it didn't get full DX11.1 support. It would be a shame if DX12 indeed is locked to the latest Windows, since that would slow its uptake
