my mom's alero comes stock with two tailpipes coming from one muffler, and i was wondering if this had a special name(someone told me catback? :confused: ) and what is the purpose of having two pipes from one muffler? if it makes any difference, it's a 4cyl

1 reason = cool factor (or lack thereof)

A CatBack describes a curve in the exhaust tubing between the exhaust manifolds and the muffler(s)

CAT back is everything behind the Catyltic Converter. Duel pipes past the muffler is usually for looks.

It really only gets fancy with X-Pipes and things before the CAT's

My TA has 1 big pipe going to the muffler, 2 exiting and each of those split into to so I have 4 pipes coming out the back end. Pontiac styling. Big V8 also.

I think it is mostly a scam... whenever they put more than one pipe into and outta a muffler, it's gotta be a collusion between the automaker and the muffler service shops, so they can charge you more green for an exhaust system replacement.
