As far as "realistic dismemberment" goes, SOF1 and SOF2 take the cake.

From a pure violence standpoint, then my vote goes to the Postal series (Postal and Postal 2).

I never bothered to play Postal. Did it feature shotgun blasts that literally splashed brains on the wall? That was a big selling point for me when I got SoF2.

Grand Theft Auto III / Vice City / San Andreas

Yes, I know, graphics are nothing comparable to today's standards.

Despite the fact that graphics may help make the series "less violent", by looking old, it does however technically provide some sick violence.

I mean ... you do almost what you want to do.

If you want to, if you feel like it, you walk around, high-jack a vehicle, kill his/her owner in the process, go two streets away, grab a hooker, get the ... erm, services ... then, once the hooker gets out of "your" vehicle, you get out, take out your baseball bat, kill her, take her ... erm ... hard earned money (sorry I had to say it), and go away just like if what you just did was as important as killing a miserable insect.

While I believe the freedom provided in the series is welcome, it also gives "extra" violence.

Things given in the name of enterainment.

I really need to get around to finally playing SOF2. I picked it up like a year ago in the bargain bin, but never have bothered with installing it.
Odd considering how much I loved the original SOF. Is the single-player campaign pretty good?

Single-player is very long, I never beat it. It's not bad, although you may get lost at times. There's one level that upset me for a while, had to get a walkthrough. You can't fire your gun and have to knock every guard out without being seen. There are some splinter cell type of things you have to do, sound is important in the game even in multiplayer.

A couple great memories were throwing a knife right into a bad guys groin, throwing a knife about 200 feet in a multiplayer match and killing someone, and sniping a flag carrier 5 feet away while hiding in very tall and thick grass.

There reasoning for not making SoF2 #1 doesn't work for me. Just because you are killing innocent people doesn't make it more violent. I didn't find that aspect of GTA that great, which is probably why I didn't bother with Postal.

I can't believe Rise of the Triad wasn't even on the top 100 list. There was way weaker games on there.

Oh man I remember Rise of the Triad. I was like 11 or something and downloaded the demo from some site (I think shareware.com or something). It was amazing.
Postal 2's violence is more like dark humor than sadism. I mean, the silencer in the game is a cat. You get a cat and stick the gun up its anus and you shoot out its mouth. Also you can urinate on people. It's fun to urinate on their face and then they vomit. I've spent a good amount of time just walking around urinating on people. It's the little things in life...

There is a marching band in postal 2!
At least with the patch/expansion there is.

There's also bigass elephants.

That being said I nominate the postal series as the most violent.
