What is the most secure email?

Is lavabit the most secure email one could get? (I don't mind payinga small fee) but I don't want anything to be read by any one else

is that my best bet or is there something else I should look at?

I don't know what provider you should use, but try using the Enigmail plugin with Thunderbird. That way your provider can't read the contents of emails you or your friends encrypt. (Addresses and subjects are a different story.)

You need someone to talk to. Both parties have to be using encryption. It's also isn't easy for n00bs to setup, so talking to mom is probably out unless you do the work to set it up. If you need to write securely it's definitely the way to go, but it's not the best for casual use. Definitely set it up though. Even if you don't use it, it's good to see how it works, and you'll get a feel for what it takes to use it.

For mail, the most secure is setting it up yourself using your own server. I like Lavabit, but a downside is it's hosted in the USA. Lavabit is solid, but your attack surface is greater. The USA is hostile to digital freedom, and with you being in the middle east, you increase the governments interest in what you're doing. I'd look for a similar service in Switzerland perhaps.

Lavabit is way better than Google, so for a little bit of money you get way better security. I'm not convinced it's the best though.

Setup engimail, and read up on public key encryption. It should be understood by everyone in computing, and is where the battles of the future will be fought. It's worth it for the educational experience.

thanks for bringing that to my attention, I must stop using them as well

now I have to check one last thing, the privacy policy of my host (host gator) to see if I wanna make an email with them which is free with my current hosting package or bite the bullet and pay for lavabit

They said, for business purposes and for privacy, we recommend you use one of those external companies (such as lavabit which I mentioned to him) because they cannot guarantee that they will not give up your data as needed. He didn't wanna further comment but I got the picture. If the customer service agent (online chat) is telling me that it means there is more to it so I didn't wanna take a chance
