What is the most quiet DVD-Rom drive I can find?

The spinning noise on CD-Rom or DVD-Rom are often overlooked spec that I can not ignore.
I heard some DVDs and cd-roms use special technology to reduce reading/seeking noises. Was it.. kenwood and Asus? Can't really remember.. 🙁

Toshiba's and Hitachi's are really quiet. Lite-On's are alright, and Pioneers sound like Delta fans. 🙂

My Lite-On 16x dvd is very loud when spinning up. It is still quieter than my friend's Pioneer(can't remember his dvd speed...probably 6x).

When playing a dvd movie, after the initial reading, it's completely silent...I believe it reduces it's speed to 1x for playing just for this reason.

Same with my Lite-On. At full blast, you definetely hear it, though.

My Acer CD-RW is SILENT, whether reading or writing. But it has a fan that comes on sometimes when it gets too hot, and that is a little noisy.

My Acer CDW1610a burner is not at all silent. It's actualy very loud. 🙁 Although.. I didn't notice it too much before.. maybe it has something to do iwth upgraded firmware I don't know.. 🙁 It's very hard to find Toshiba DVD-ROMs in australia. And even if i can, they are outrageously priced.
I don't want to raise the volume by twice as much just to drown out the spinning noise~~!!!

I don't know what you guys are doing with your lite-ons (16x) but my drive is extremely quiet throughout and damn near completely silent when playing dvd movies or my divx rips...What do you guys think is loud??? I mean damn it is doing massive rpms to achieve the highest average read speeds of dvd and cd players when I bought mine 2 months back...

My knock is the relative slow seek time...

yup I know all about that annoying noise. The only high speed drive I have seen that is not loud is a Hitachi 12X DVD. The down side to that drive is it would not read most CD-R/CD-RW discs I tried.

The solution I recommend is get a program called Drive Speed (free, from the makers of Nero). It allows you to choose the speed of the drive. I always set it to 8X which is basically totally silent. I have compiled a small list of drives that are and are not compatible.

Drives that do work with Drive Speed:
Panasonic
Hitachi
Toshiba
Lite-On

Drives that do NOT work with Drive Speed:
Samsung
Acer

I have used a Pioneer and a Lite-On, and they are both quite loud when spinning up. I have a Sony 16X, and it is the quietest drive that I have ever worked with. It is silky smooth, and I have not had any problems reading disks at all. I would definitely pick up a Sony drive.

What everyone seems to fail to consider is that not all disks, CD or DVD, are the same. Some are slightly out of balance due to many factors . . . even label printing. When spun at very high speeds they vibrate slightly, and vibration leads to noise. It's analogous to spinning up a car wheel on a tire balancer. To fairly evaluate a drive's inherent noise level, use a completely slick, high quality blank with no label or writing.

Since DVD drives are basically good for two things, watching and ripping DVDs.

If you're only gonna be watching DVDs, get a 1x or 2x drive. Viola! Quiet.

Are samsung drives quiet?

My options on drives would be..
Pioneer, lite-on, sony and samsung.

But I'm ruling out the pioneer after many users complaints on its noise. Yes.. I hate noise. 🙁

I wouldn't mind sony ones.. but some people told me it's simply crap.. I don't know which part of it is bad..

Samsung is all right.. anyone has any experience with them?

It's not just for DVD watching, but also listening musics and watching DivX as well...

I have a 5X creative that you can hardly hear with you ear up to the case, it doubles as a 32X CDROM.

I've had an aopen for 6 or so months, and am very happy with it. Much quieter than any recent cdrom that i've used.

I don't doubt there is not much difference in noise between DVD-ROMs while they are playing DVD movies at 1X speed.
But what about DivX movies and so on?

how about my creative 5X that's dead silent no matter what it's doing?

it also doesnt read multisession CDs and reads audio ones poorly...

it's for sale.

Well toshibas are really quite. Even the new 16X ones are not bad. Dont know whey they keep making faster DVDROMS for. You can' t even rip DVDs that much faster anyways. I have a Pioneer DVD with slot loading. I found if you put a magazine over it you can barely hear it. But it's hard to get destracted with some Klipsch speakers firing on your movies 🙂

magazine? youmean on top of the PC case?
I used to put 2 very thick and heavy computer reference books on it to reduce the vibration 🙂

I read a review on Sony drives. And they are supposedto be very quiet.. but.. I heard too many bad things about sony drives. 🙁
I would either go for Lite-on LTD165 or Pioneer tray loading drives..
