Seems my ipaq 5555 ain't cutting it anymore as it runs TomTom 6 slow..even when I OC the Xscale CPU from 400 to 530Mhz..

so whats the most powerful PDA in the market nowadays? I don't need smartphone features..

I run Tom Tom 5 just fine on my Palm Lifedrive (xscale 400mhz). I'd be suprised if I had a problem with TomTom 6.

Maybe your SD card slot is to slow?

I am not sure if its the CPU or the speed of the SD card. I am using a sandisk Ultra II..maybe if get a faster card it'll perform better?

Before OC the CPU, it runs like slideshow, at 530Mhz..its much smoother but still not as smooth as Navigator 5

I don't think it could be the SD card's speed. There's not much data to be loading from it, and handheld GPS units have been doing it for 10 years on slower memory I'm sure.

TomTom 5 only has one courtry's map, IE USA or Canada, TomTom 6 has Both countries in the map so you can plan journeys across border. My SD card is the Ultra II Sandisk, i don't think its that slow...

I'm curious. What's the advantage of buying the software & receiver for the PDA ($300 on their site) when you can get a device with a bigger screen and the software loaded for the same price (TomTom One, $300)?

God I think my PDA is outdated --- Ipaq 3850 @ 206Mhz for the past 5 years. But I still get by with a 4 year old Pharos GPS receiver running the Ostia mapping program. No 3D maps, but it runs fairly fast.

Maybe TomTom is just poorly coded?

I think there might be some incompatibility between your PDA and your SD card. I have a Mio 168 (ARM 300MHZ) and it runs TT6 fine. In fact is a little faster than TT5. I have both Iguidance 3.0 and TT6 on a 2GB SD card. Iguidance is much better IMO.

What's the best map software for a PDA. I bought an Eten m700,but still to get any maps. Looking for something that easy to use,has Canadian maps and small i size. Voice option would be nice too.

Are there reviews on mapping software for GPS units?

Good luck finding one. Dell has cancelled their Axim line, so getting an extended warranty on one is impossible (or hard at the very least), nor can you purchase through Dell. The IPAQ HX2795b is the equivalent of the Dell Axim x51v 624MHz though. outpost has them for $379 (by far chepaer than anywhere else), if you can deal with DHL shipping. (I never knew my plants could sign for packages)

EDIT: I bought the Ipaq HX4795b to upgrade from my Palm Zire 71. After using it for about 3 days now, I think I should have stayed with a Palm. But it is useable for what I wanted it for...

I think that Dell is not making the Axims anymore; at least they do not list them on their site.

My Dad's Treo runs it without a hiccup. Longest waiting time I've experienced was while calculating a route from Sacramento to Santa Cruz, and it took about 15 seconds.

I just got myself a HX4705 (624Mhz CPU, VGA screen) and its a bit smoother now. But i know it won't be faster than my Ipaq 5555 since the Screen has 4X the resolution of the 5555.

The reason why i am staying away with smartphone is because its screen is too small and hard to read when i mount it near the dashboard.

Dell Axim x51v i got a refurb off of ebay

624mhz cpu, 256mb of non volatile ram so when the batt dies you dont lose everything, wicked 3.7inch 640x480 screen, decently built. the dell also uses intels G2700 graphics chip with its own 16mb of vram and the ability to decode lots of different video formats.

i have tomtom navigator 5 on my Axim x51v and its smooth as silk.... the wide screen in landscape mode is awesome.
