what is the most populated RTS right now?

Rome Total War ?

Haven't seen a good one since. Zero hour wasn't bad, especially if you can mod it.. All though the single player campaigns are shorter than I am accustom too.

There isn't good statistics on RTS games, but SC is definetly the most popular. WC3 is probably the next most popular. Maybe one of the Age games is next. (AOE II?)

FPS stats are easier to find, but reliability is questionable. Still, the most popular one beyond a doubt is Counter-Strike 1.6 followed by Counter-Strike: Source. Then, it gets hazy with various game vying for 3rd (2nd?) place -- Battlefield 2, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Call of Duty 2, and UT2004. (most likely in that order)

It's almost tied with CS:S. Being able to run it on an old TNT 16MB card is why it's still so popular.

And AoK used to be huge, but I heard the Zone dropped it. Also mrfixitonline.com used to be an amazing resource for following leagues and watching recorded games and talking strategy, but it's devolved into some PHPNuke site now.

AoE 3 is good, I got bored a little quicker then normal of it though. I found that even at the harder levels the AI could be crushed with a quick rush. SC is an amazing game, but I am not good enough to play with more then one or two computer players as they always seem to team up and kill me, if you are playing with friends though there is nothing better even now. I have been playing the demo for Rise of Nations Rise of Lengends and that game is insanely fun even with only 2 civs in the demo. graphics wise it's really good, plus uber easy on a system. I have a Sempron and 9600pro and I still get 30-60 frames at 1280x768 with some of the details on. AoE original is still really fun if you are Lanning it up with a few friends with crappy computers. I don't have a whole lot of experience with WC3 or RoN but what I did play I liked.

CS 1.6 has 3x as many players still. (which puts it about 5x as many players than any other game if you count them together) This is mostly because it runs better than CS:S, but others will have you believe it has better gameplay. I wouldn't say the differences are better, but just different. So, some people can't run CS:S well or at all, and others don't want to adapt.

AoE2 was pretty big about 1 1/2 years ago. maybe its still big now, or maybe AoE3 is the big thing.

PseudoKnight: CS 1.6 has been refined and tested much longer than CS:S has, so hitboxes are different, weapon dynamics are different, and overall the game is more balanced and NOT BUGGY.

Different, yes. More balanced... uh... not to a significant degree if that's true. But in both games the better player wins. The winner of equal players is often determined by their cash. As for buggy, as you said the Half-Life engine is a lot more mature. However, CS:S is constantly improving and at the current state I really don't notice any more bugs than in 1.6. (unless you count the corresponding *TV features, which Source is severely lacking) This changes with every patch, though, but that's the nature of constant development and I'm willing to suffer a little for the privilege of updates.

So, as of now, I play Source, but I watch competitive 1.6 matches. I find Source to be more fun, but 1.6 is often more interesting competitively.

The Warhammer: DOW community used to be thick as thieves. But I think the thrill ran out fast and now theres not too many people.
(Unless I'm doing something wrong.)

I wish there was a bigger following for Act Of War. Out of all the RTS's its probably my favorite. Which is saying a lot since I started playing the genre back in DOS with a little Mindcraft game called Siege. Then it was Warcraft and C&C.

I wonder if maybe the turn-based strategy people have increased in numbers.
I havent checked the Heroes 3 multiplayer server or Disciples 2 in a LONG time.
Age of Wonders is OK too. But it occured to me if I get bored on a small single-player map I probably couldnt hold out online. I'd make a lot of enemies by forfeiting halfway through.
