So I am really bad at fighting games, generally. I played the demo for Street Fighter II on XBLA and my matches are hilariously bad since pretty much everything in that game requires a specific combo.

On the other hand, I've done pretty well with the Soul Calibur series in the past since its "combos" generally revolve around a single direction + one or two buttons pressed at once, rather than a sequence of buttons that I can never remember, much less pull off in a hectic fight. The hit/guard/throw system works nicely too, even though it's just a simple rock/paper/scissors thing.

Since I'd be playing locally with friends, I'm looking for a fighting game that is easy to pick up and play and doesn't require you to get too deep to do well. Any recommendations?

I was thinking either Soul Calibur IV or the original Soul Calibur XBLA game. Any other recommendations? People rave about SF IV but I'm afraid it's not very noob-friendly... if anyone wants to set me straight, please do so.

PS Didn't mention this at first, but I'm on an Xbox 360. I figured it was obvious because I was mentioning the XBLA, but I should still point that out just in case.

By combo's do you mean special moves? Your description makes it sound like you're talking about special moves instead of actual combos. Also, the D-pad on the 360 sucks bad, good luck putting in correct combinations for moves on that thing lol.

Anyway I'd recommend 2 things, first off, get a different controller if you can, I can't imagine trying to play a game like guilty gear with that D-pad it's awful. Second, combinations come more naturally the more you play, so don't get discouraged quickly.

I liked Soul Calibur 2 for the original Xbox the best of the series, but SC4 on the 360 is pretty good - it certainly has nicer graphics than the previous ones (which were actually pretty good in itself, especially SC on the Dreamcast).

IMHO, I've yet to see a non-n00b-friendly fighting game. Even the vaunted VF5 just isn't that difficult playing against the computer, at least at first.

As just a casual, fun fighting game. Marvel VS Capcom 2 was a good button masher. Unless you played against people who knew what they were doing you could easily pick up enough to play. It is coming to the XBLA soon I hope.

i dont think there are very many simple fighting games, some have a tutorial mode and i recommend the OP practice one move at a time and after a while it should come more fluently.

I guess you're right - they're special moves. Not combos. Now that you mention it, I do remember that there were combos in SC as well, but they're not easy to pull off and furthermore, they're not even that important. Stances are much more important (especially for certain characters like Ivy, Siegfried/Nightmare, and Yoshimitsu).

Who knows, I might just pick up a cheap GameCube and SSBM. The whole setup would only be like $100 and Melee isn't even that far from Brawl. Plus it's 4-player instead of being limited to 2 like most fighting games.

I very much doubt you will be disappointed in that course of action. SSBM is one of the most accessible fighters you will ever find and really shines if you're interested in local multiplayer as you say. SSBM plus two or three friends lends itself to almost unlimited replay value.
