I've been putting spybot search & destroy on my friends & families machines. It's a great piece of software however I need something that is non -intrusive and that does not harass an uneducated user with questions about what to allow and what not. Atleast something with with experience level adjusting. Also it must be freeware.

I haven't used a spyware program in quite some time, probably because I just nuke anything I get suspicious of so I can't really comment on programs that have an easy user interface. ;) Besides if you saw some of my family member's computers you'd nuke them too.

I would recommend looking at a program with a strong active protection rather than going by a program that has an easy user interface. The reason why I recommend this is because no one program is going to get rid of everything if a machine gets really infected.

You'll still have to troubleshoot to get rid of the residual crap.

I highly recommend some of the additional controls discussed by John and Mechbgon, especially for your *average* computer user.
