what is the most extravagant event you've seen planned for a high school graduation party?

a relative of mine has a son who is graduating from high school this May and he wants everyone (family and friends) to take a 3 day cruise to Cozumel and have his kid's graduation party on the boat.

email:

Think out of the box and we may want to set up other bigger things like a fishing trip to the bahamas,or a small cruise, like a 3-dayer to Cozumel only 450 from the port per person. Your choice, we won't be disappointed either way. I want this to be big for Adam, I've been looking at a possible 45 footer charter to the Bahamas, big $ , however, yacht holds 8 any takers? Big fish, marlin all the way and diving!!

do you think this is going overboard?

And I thought people throwing keg parties was a big deal for HS graduation.

if you have the money to throw away, why not?

for me making 34K a year - way too extravagant.

you know what, where they live there is competition amongst parents to give their kids MORE AND MORE! i think that is what is driving the extravagance of this party.

my friend's parents rented out a hall and threw a big party and I thought even that was kinda silly.

I mean, it's high school. my parents helped me finance a trip to Europe that summer instead.

If they were paying, then I'd go if I could.

Otherwise, I don't give two shits about someone graduating from HS, even if it is family.

Its overboard for college graduation, a marriage, birth of a child etc.
Looks to me like the relative just wants to go on a (personal) cruise and help other foot a portion of the bill.
I would would LOL in their face if I got that email.

do you think this is going overboard?

Do you even have to ask this question Mosh?
Also +2pts for the "overboard" pun! Now if you could have worked Kurt Russel or Goldie Hawn into the thread that woulda been a slam dunk.

what's the problem? i think it's ridiculous to suggest having a high school graduation party in that venue. i had planned to fly down for a three day weekend and attend a house party there, but if this is what it's coming to i'm going to pass. too expensive to fly there and go on a cruise. i think they are asking too much of the guests.

They're asking people to go on a cruise to celebrate their son's graduation... of course you're free to decline, but they're stupid to ask in the first place.

Yeah if you have to pay your own way there is no point. Same goes for weddings in exotic locations...you can't expect guests to fork up $1k+ in travel/hotel expenses.

Bad place to live then. And I have to agree, a cruise for HS graduation is beyond silly. Besides, functional illiterates graduate most high schools - it's not even an accomplishment anymore.

Ah, but it is. So is the graduation of kindergarden (and the cermony that follows), graduation from the elementary school (and the cermony that follows), and graduation from middle school (and the cermony that follows).

I find it amusing that such small "accomplishments" are celebrated when things like graduating with a MS, JD, MD, and PhD are largely ignored with parties. I know i didn't even go to my MS graduation cermony. My parents weren't interested in going. I feel that those accomplishments might deserve a trip/party like this.
