Holy shit, there are more murders in Flint every year than in all of New Zealand, which has nearly 40 times the population. What a shithole.

High unemployment rate in Flint. Has been so for nearly 3 decades, the town has been falling to shit year after year.

For the record, sheep-raping is not an employable skill in Flint. So if you want to make a direct comparison, I think you guys would be waaaaaaaay worse without all those sheep-related government subsidies.

New Orleans. I know that we're supposed to pretend that we love it after Katrina, but if God gave America an enema that's where he'd put the hose. We should have left that dump under water after it was flooded.

As someone who lives in Baltimore (within city limits, I'm not a suburbanite) I can say that this city has serious issues, but we're not as much of a shithole as Detroit or New Orleans.

Baltimore's rape numbers should be much higher. The police department was recently busted for massively under-reporting rape statistics. Plus who knows how much shit goes down in the ghetto that never gets reported.

How is Camden not on this list? It has the 3rd largest murders per capita or something.

Battlefield north st. Louis city

Fortunately the rest of the city and surrounding metro area is just peachy in comparison

Gary has come a long way according to some article I read awhile back, can't remember where. Still a shithole however.

Good god - I would hate to see what it looked like before it 'improved' then

Im telling you akron Ohio hasn't been too good this year. I've heard of at least 5 murders in the last 2-3 months. Its getting to where im ready to move..

o_O Well - I guess it's a good thing that people live places where 5 murders over 2-3 months is low

My wife and I were discussing this the other day. We lived in St. Louis on a project for two years in the Clayton area and I couldn't imagine feeling more safe in an area. Now we're in Fort Lauderdale...living in a nice neighborhood near the beach, and you feel 1000x less safe here.

St. Louis may be a shithole, but you could live there your whole life without knowing it if you never ventured to North St. Louis or across the bridge to East St. Louis.

WTF does the OP think Atlanta is bad enough to even warrant mention with these other two? Where did he get that impression? Because the population is mostly black? Racist.

It's not even in the top 20.

I know Detroit has the reputation, but I'm going to go with either Baltimore or New Orleans.

Army was sending medics to New Orleans not long ago for triage help so they could get experience in treating gunshot wounds, what does that tell ya?
There are some areas of Baltimore that are just so nasty, so bad, it looks like a clip from District 9. There's a couple places there in need of a MOAB.

Good ole Gary, the asshole of Chicago. From what I understand, the city has improved quite a bit over the past decade or two. No longer the murder capital of the US. Gary has come a long way according to some article I read awhile back, can't remember where. Still a shithole however.

i thought danville was chicago's new asshole.

edit- or i guess it's just part of the piping. but damn it's bad for a 'small town'.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

by overall violent crime:

St. Louis, MO
Detroit, MI
Memphis, TN (o_O)
Oakland, CA
Baltimore, MD

by murders:

New Orleans, LA
St. Louis, MO
Detroit, MI
Baltimore, MD
Newark, NJ

looks to me like St. Louis could be the "winner" here... it's kinda shocking. I can't imagine how bad those places must be. as it is, I'm terrified to drive through some parts of Newark, NJ at night and we're barely in the top 5. Camden, NJ is like something out of a post-apocalyptic horror movie.

Somebody has a deal with the police line tape maker, that's
pretty obvious.

Keep in mind when you see statistics for st. Louis it doesnt take into account the metro region, so in reality its not even close to many other cities.

That said, the pockets of crime are literally war-zones and are probably the worst in the country
